HIGH HEEL NAILS RATTLER
Tulare, Cal.—A high-heeled
shoe proved a good substitute for
a forked stick when Mrs. Ruby
Smith of Woodlake encountered
a rattlesnake.
Mrs. Smith says the substitu- I
tlon was unintentional.
She heard a buzzing as she got 1
out of her car in Sequoia Na- ।
tional Park. She saw her shoe
had nailed a rattler to the |
ground. She removed the other
shoe and beat the snake to
death.

Talmadge Calls
On Congress To
Shield Textiles
ATLANTA, June 18 (GPS) —
Once again Georgia’s U. S. Sen
ator Herman E. Talmadge has
called for congressional action
to protect the American textile
I industry from abuses under U.S.
1 foreign policies. Taking the
Senate floor the other day, the
junior senator said:
“Mr. President, the trade and
foreign aid policies of the United
States with respect to the sub
sidized exportation of raw cotton
and the indiscriminate importa
tion of finished textile goods are
■jeopardizing the continued ex
, istence of the American textile
industry and threatening the
jobs of the country’s 1.919,200
textile workers.
Under present procedures
foreign countries can buy sur
plus American cotton with bor
rowed American dollars 20 per
cent cheaper than it sells in this
country and. taking advantage
of wage rates which in many in
stances are one-tenth or less of
the American legal minimum
and of virtually nonexistent
tariff barriers, undersell com
parable American textile prod
ucts on the American markets.
“This situation will be ma
terially worsened on August 31
when the export subsidy on cot
ton will be increased to eight
cents perpound.
“A special subcommittee of the
Senate Committee on Interstate
and Foreign Commerce recently
made an exhaustive study of the
problem and, in an excellent re
port. recommended a 10-point
program of help and relief for
the textile industry.
“It is my earnest hope that
Congress will take affirmative
action on these proposals before
the close of this first session of
the 86th Congress.”
Senator Talmadge pointed to a
recent statement by J. Craig
Smith, president of Avondale
Mills, which he said graphically
described the grave threat posed
to the American textile industry.
The senator had this statement,
along with a recent weekly col
umn of his own dealing with the
subject, inserted into the Con
gressional Record.
Talmadge, in his column, con
cluded by saying: “It is my reso
lute conviction that the Ameri
can textile industry, as well as
all other domestic industries,
has a right not only to expect
but also to demand that both
Congress and the executive
branch by statute and policy
give it and the jobs of its work
ers effective protection from
unfair foreign competition.
County Agents Will
(Continued From Page 6)
at 12:30 p.m. at the Dinkier
Plaza Hotel.
Mr. Sutton said American
Cyanamid Company had select
ed Georgia as the Southeastern
state to be honored this year
because of the exceptional work
rendered by its county agents
and other Extension Service
workers. In arranging the event,
he said, the sponsor character
ized Georgia’s county agents
and Extension workers as “In
terpretors among the scientist,
the research worker and the
farmer.”
He said the company com
mented that “without their
work, many of the remarkable
scientific discoveries made in i
agriculture in recent years |
would be far less widely used
than they are.”
The outstanding agent se- [
lected to receive the plaque I
will be announced soon, Mr.
Sutton added. He pointed out
that although the plaque will :
be awarded an individual, its I
presentation and the luncheon '
itself will honor the contribu-1
tions of all county agents.
