Straw Vote Plan
Hotly Argued in
Political Arena
Gov. Ernest Vandiver’s pro
posed straw vote on the use of
pledged or unpledged presiden
tial electors in Georgia, which
Fulton Superior Court Judge
Luther Alverson has ruled can
legally be taken in the Sept. 14
primary election, has caused
some fireworks on the state po
litical scene.
But perhaps the hottest ver
bal battle to date is the one be
tween the governor and an ex
governor. It all started when

former Gov. Ellis Arnall (1) ac
cused Georgia Democratic lead
ers of being “traitors” to the
party; (2) criticized the State
Democratic Executive Committee
for leaving the issue of party
loyalty up to a referendum in
the primary, and (3) charged
that Vandiver has taken a
“pussy-footing” approach to the
issue.
Gov. Vandiver, who, as titular
head of the state party, proposed
the referendum in the first
place, came right back with
equally strong language aimed
at the ex-governor. Said he:
“The word ‘traitor’ falling
from the lips of Ellis Arnall is
like the word ‘betrayer’ falling
from the lips of Judas Iscariot.
“This is the same Ellis Arnall
who, speaking from lecture plat
forms throughout the country,
blackened and belittled the good
name of his native state and her
people.
“This is the same Ellis Arnall
who received a citation and was
decorated with a medal from a
Communist front organization
for his activities in seeking to
break down all phases of seg
regation in Southern life.
“This is the same Ellis Arnall
who, knowingly and willfully,
helped to bring about the very
conditions which now threaten
to destroy racial harmony and
to force upon the people intoler
able conditions which neither
race desires.
“This is the same Ellis Arnall
who, along with a handful of
other renegade whites, invited
the Federal Supreme Court to
hand down an unrealistic de
cision that threatens to divide
and weaken our country and to
engulf us all.
“This is the same Ellis Arnall
who announced his prospective
candidacy for governor from
Washington, D.C., right in the
very shadow of NAACP national
headquarters.”
