“THE HOUSE OE BARGAINS”
EAST WASHINGTON ST. PHONE 180 SUMMERVILLE
signed to Company A, 3rd Bat
talion, Ist Training Regiment of
the U.S. Army Training Center,
Infantry, at Fort Jackson, S.C.
where he is undergoing eight
weeks of Basic Combat Train
ing.
He will be taught rifle marks
manship under the U.S. Army’s
Trainfire program which en
ables the modern soldier to be
come a better rifleman in less
time than previous methods. In
this program, most of his train
ing will consist of firing his rifle
at pop-up targets at unknown
distances on terrain which dup
licates combat areas. Other
highlights of his intensive train
ing include squad tactics, bay
onet and hand-to-hand combat,
and crawling the infiltration
course while machine gun fire
is popping overhead.
During his seventh week of
training, he will live in the field
under conditions similar to those
in the forward areas of a battle
zone. He moves over rough ter
rain on foot and in tactical ve
hicles and participates in nu
merous combat situations of a
realistic nature. He learns the
practical application of the skills
and knowledge gained in all
previous instruction.
As a climax to this first phase
of training, he will march with
his battalion in a review before
the commanding general of
Fort Jackson. This ceremony is
witnessed by relatives and
friends of the trainees who at
tend the “open house” held by
each company on graduation
day.

Chattooga County Uses
Both Mental Health Laws
Chattooga County will use both the old and new men
tal health laws. Ordinary John King said this week.
He noted that the law provides either may be used.
In some cases it is best to proceed under the old law,
he said. In others, it is best to use the new one, he added.
Under the old law, the first
step was for the family to obtain
a lunacy warrant. Under the
new one, the first step is for the
family to have the patient ex
amined by a physician and have
the physician then fill out a cer
tificate which is provided by the
ordinary.
The new law also provides that
the patient shall not be housed
in a jail except in case of “an
emergency”. Ordinary King said
this is not done here anyway un
less there is an element of dan
ger involved.
The State Health Department
has recommended that the old
law not be used unless a patient
being committed has assets
which in the opinion of the or
dinary require the appointment
of a guardian.
Among changes in the law are
these:
The term "insane” has been
changed to “mentally ill” and
the name of the local “lunacy
commission” has been changed
to “examining committee”.
Under the new law patients
can exercise all of their civil
rights which include the right to
dispose of property, execute in
struments, make purchases,
make contracts and vote.
The patient or his attorney
must be given notice of the
hearing and the attorney can
waive the 10-day waiting period
on behalf of the patient.
Patients may be admitted to
hospitals other than Milledge
ville State Hospital which are

THE SUMMERVILLE NEWS. SUMMERVILLE, GEORGIA
approved by the State Board of
Health, but right now only VA

Voluntary patients may be de

30 days under the old laws.
The fee paid to each member
of the examining committee by
the county of the patient’s resi

nary’s fee is changed from S2O to

IRRIGATION DANGERS
Increasing use of irrigation

electrical power lines; (2) Never
allow water from a sprinkler ir

Keep pump motors repaired.
PESTICIDE SAFETY
Main causes of poisoning from
pesticides are storing them in an
unlocked room, keeping them in
soft drink bottles or other un
labled containers, and failing to
read and follow directions and
cautions on labels, according to
engineers, Georgia Agricultural
Extension Service.
