® "I
From Mrs. Laura W. Holder,
Salem, Oregon: I remember the
first 5 & 10 store in town. It was
called The Busy Bee. What fab
ulous stories we heard of what
might be purchased for 5c and
10c. How anxious I was to get to
that store! Just to look! We never
had money to spend in our large
family, except a nickel at the
State Fair.
I was nearly 15 years old and
next to the top of nine children,
the tenth came later. Mama
must have thought I might as
well take over some of the Christ
mas shopping because when we
heard somq older girls were
going to visit this store, I was al
lowed to go along with 50c tied in
the corner of my hanky—the most
I had ever had to spend! The store
was entrancing in that day, but
just wouldn't exist today.
The only gift that stands out in
my memory cost 15c and was for
my mother. It was the most beau
tiful thing I could see in the
store—a picture framed in a gray
mat. But, oh, the lush pastel col
ors of the party dresses of a
dozen little girls sitting around
a long white table, even the ice
cream they were eating was pink.
We often had homemade ice
cream, but it was never pink.
This picture remained on our
kitchen wall, near our long table,
as long as I was home, until I
was twenty.
The first party dress I had, I
U Tncd and made. It was pink
silk poplin, trimmed in white
shadow lace. I wore it to a Chirst
mas party.
I still love beautiful pictures,
and beautiful textiles —and little
girls!
