HYMN OF MONTH
Ecjoice The Lord Is King
The author, the Rev. Charles
Wesley, is too well known to
need extended notice. His name
is immortal. He was the sweet'
singer of Methodism, and the
support and inspiration of his
evangelist brother, John Wesley.
Dr. James Moffatt-calls him the
greatest hymn writer of any
nge.
Charles Wesley was the 18th J
child of Susanna and Samuel {
Wesley. When only eight he;
went to Westminister School in I
London where iris older brother 1
was a master The hours were
long, study was concentrated,
and rough bo.v.s were always
glad to perpetuate the brutal
traditions of the sciiool The
boys had to speak Latin at all
times His further education was
completed at Christ Church. Ox

On graduation Charles took
Holy Orders and shipped to
Georgia as private secretary to
Governor Oglethorpe. He and
John sailed together. Charles i

THE SUMMERVILLE NEWS, SUMMERVILLE, GEORGIA
Mrs. Worsham was a member
of the 1961 graduating class of
Summerville High School and is
employed at the Mi-Place Case
in Pennville. She also is com
pleting a business course at the
Robert Treadway School.
Mr. Worsham is a 1959 grad
uate of Summerville High
School and is employed by Geor
gia Rug Mill.
After a short trip to the
Smoky Mountains. Mr. and Mrs.
Worsham will reside in their
new home on the Lyerly High
way.
very next day he wrote his first
hynyj Afterwards, scarcely a
day OV Experience passed with
"‘oiit its erystallization into verse.
In all he wrote 6,500 hymns.
These hymns, as much as the
40.000 sermons preached and the
250.000 miles traveled by brother
John as an itinerant preacher,
; had to do with the great spir
! itual movement of Methodism
| and also with a revived English
and American Protestantism.
This hymn of Wesley’s ap
-1 peared first in his “Hymns for
Our Lord’s Resurrection." Only
three of the six original stanzas
are used here and they form a
triumphant paean of praise to
Christ as Lord and King. It is
suitable for all services of adora
tion, as only the last portion of
the second stanza sounds the
resurrection note. The hymn is
based on Phil. 4:4 “Rejoice in
| file Lord always: and again I
say. Rejoice. ’’
The Rev. John Darwall. com
poser. was born in England He
graduated from Oxford and be
came curate and later vicar of
Walsall. An enthusiastic poet
! and amateur musician, he com
! posed a tune for each of the 150
metrical psalms. The tune "Dar
' wall's 148th" was first published
as a musical setting for Psalm
148 and has been widely used.
The melody has a mounting
note of triumph and praise in
I it.
