Miss Espy’s Latin Class
Wins National Recognition
The Latin class of Miss Dorothy Espy, of Hapeville, for
merly of Summerville, was discussed in a recent article in
the Atlanta Constitution.
Miss Espy is the daughter of the late Dayton Espy and
she is a niece of Miss Maude
Sewell of Summerville. She is a
graduate of Shorter College and
the University of California and
lives in Forest Park with her
mother, Mrs. W. D. Underwood
and the Rev. Mr. Underwood.
Miss Espy’s class has won a
trophy presented by the Asso
ciation for the Promotion of the
Study of Latin. The trophy is
given schools which have at
least three students who have
scored within five points of a
perfect score on the APSL Na
tionwide Latin Examination.
Since it started participation
in the national examination,
Hapeville High has always made
an outstanding showing. Miss
Espy noted that though the na
tional median for participants
was 45 last year, at Hapeville
the very lowest score made was
64.
Miss Espy declares that Latin
can help a student both now
and in later life in many ways.
“It can be a help right now,”
she says, “as the student studies
English grammar, spelling and
words. Over 64 per cent of Eng
lish words come from Latin.”
Other languages are immeas
urably easier to learn once yov,
have studied Latin—their basis.
Miss Espy continues.
“There is a present-day value
in the study of Roman life and
civilization as well. There are

Miss Espy notes that Latin
. words are used frequently in the
professions of medicine and law
as”^ well as in other scientific
fields.
Each year, the class stages a
' Roman banquet, with members
1 donning togas and stolas to eat
Roman foods. The group also
' will visit shut-ins at Christmas
■ and sing Latin carols.
