These records look good but can they be verified? This of course is good
politics if it works the second time. Remember the p ro m i s es of the 1959
platform. Just to name one of them — the others being too numerous to
mention — "If elected, the people of the City of Summerville will be in
formed of the city's financial condition through 'monthly reports' So at
election time we get a round-about report, with too many round figures.
Is this quality and good management that has had so much
emphasis in this election?
Abraham Lincoln once said, “You can fool sonic of the people some of
the time, but not all of the people all of the time."
IF I AM ELECTED:
1. I promise to serve the people of the City of

DECISION HY DEC. 29
Trion High Considers
Dropping Into Class B
The possibility of Trion High
Schoo] dropping from A classi- |
fication to B in athletic events j
is under discussion.
A decision must be made by
December 29.
By average daily attendance
standards, the school qualifies
for only Class C competition, but
rules permit a school to move up
into a higher classification if it |
desires. It may not move below
its class, however. For years, |
Trion has played in Class A.
School officials were hosts |
last week to several other area !
schools interested in going into i
Class B, and another meeting, I
including still other interested i
schools, is set for next week, ■
Trion School Supt. A. J. Strick- :
land said this week. !
Winter Recreation Program
Starts Here in Early January
A round of winter and spring activities will start in
early January at the Summerville Recreation Center, Dick
Dickens, director, has announced.
Western square dancing will be the first program sched-
uled to kick off the new year.
Other features already sched
uled include basketball and
ballroom dancing.
Fred Caswell, well known
square dance caller from Car
tersville, will be on hand each
Monday night beginning Jan
uary 8 to instruct these classes.
The program is designed for
both the beginner and the more
experienced dancer and it has
been tentatively planned to of
fer this activity to teenagers as
well as adults.
The month of January will
also see another exciting ac
tivity offered in the form of a
basketball program.
This activity will be divided
into four categories:
Category 1 will be Biddy Bas
ketball for young boys, age 7,8,
and 9.
Category 2 will be Midget Bas
ketball for boys age 10. 11, 12,
and 13.
Category 3 will be for men’s
He noted that one reason
Trion has played in A instead of
B was the fact that so much
long distance travel would be
involved in playing in B—many
of the B schools are located
farther south in the state.
Schools meeting in Trion last
week to discuss Class B were
Chattanooga Valley, Gordon
Lee, Dade, Coosa and Model.
The possibility of having
north, middle an d south sec
tions in Region Class B, is under
discussion, Mr. Strickland said.
This would perhaps cut out
much of the travel.
Northwest Georgia is Region
3 and schools within the region
are divided into classes accord
ing to ADA—those with 775 ADA
or more, being in AAA; those
basketball, age 18 and up.
Category 4 will be women’s
basketball, also age 18 and up.
It has been anticipated by Mr.
Dickens that complete leagues
in each category will be or
ganized with the majority of the
games being played here at
home.
In late February or early
March, ballroom dancing classes
will be offered to adults in the
area. The classes will consist of
instructions in fox trot, waltz,
cha cha, rumba, samba, and the
jitter bug.
As yet, an instructor has not
been selected to teach the
course, however several quali
fied people are being considered
for this activity.
Along this same line, instruc
tions in the latest teenage
dances will be offered to that
age group. This program was
presented at the recent Georgia
Recreation Society’s Youth Con
ference and it proved to be one

Reclassifications occur every
two years, with the decision
being based on the prior year’s
ADA.
Chattooga High recently
learned it would have to play in
AA next year because it had 526
ADA last year—or three high
schools which were consolidated
had a combined ADA of that
figure. Despite an appeal from
Chattooga High officials, the
Georgia High School Athletic
Assn.—governing bo d y over
classifications —refused to let
Chattooga continue in A.
Trion’s possible change would
not be compulsory—because it
plays in a higher classification
than it actually rates, ADA-wise.
of the most successful and
popular sessions offered. Ac
cording to Dickens: “Dancing is
a very important factor in a
teen program and, unfortunate
ly, our teenagers have not had
a great deal of exposure to the
latest dancing fads. If our
young people will take advan
tage of this program, it will be a
valuable asset in having a more
successful teen club.”
The tap, ballet, and acrobatic
dancing classes for the younger
children, which has been in ses
sion since September, will con
tinue throughout the school
year. Climax of the fall classes
will be a recital at Christmas
and likewise in the spring, for
the winter classes. The Bobbie
Roberts School of Dancing in
Rome has been teaching in the
program.
The citizens of Summerville
and Chattooga County are
urged to keep this list of forth
coming recreational programs in
mind in order that they may
take advantage of recreation in
our community, Mr. Dickens
said.
Adult Basketball Starts
In Summerville Jan. 15
The adult basketball program,
sponsored by the Summerville
Recreation Department, is in the
making with a tentative start
ing date of January 15.
One women’s team has already
been organized and it is antiti
pated that at least four men’s
teams will be developed in the
near future.
The men’s league, which will ;
cover from ages 18 and up, will ।
be organized on a similar basis 1
as the recent softball program.
A constitution or a set of by- ■
laws will be drawn governing
player eligibility, team rosters,
league rules, etc., which will be
added protection for the teams
participating as well as keeping
the league on an even basis.
The games will be playea on
Monday and Thursday nights
with a double-header on tap
