Hymn of Month
‘The Beauteous Day Now Closes’
This hymn is symbolic of a
new period in German hymnody.
The miseries of the Thirty Years’
War are slowly being alleviated,
and the fighting of the theo
logians ever dogmas and rituals
is moderating.
The Rev. Paul Gerhardt is the
most beloved of all German
hymnists and ranks next to
Luther as the most gifted and
popular writer of the Lutheran
Church. Gerhardt had no settled
position until he was 45 years
old. Then he was offered a living
in a small village, was ordained
to the ministry, married the
woman he had long loved and
began to publish the hymns he
had for many years been writing.
Later, he was called as assist
ant pastor to a great cathedral
church in Berlin. There, for a
few years he enjoyed fame as a
preacher and honor as a man
of deep piety and good works.
During this period of service, he
was ordered to sign an edict
which forbade free discussion of
the differences between the
Lutheran and Reformed Church.

SWEET ONE—This little lass
is Karan Renae Bailey, five
months-old daughter of the
Rev. and Mrs. Jimmy Bailey
of Trion. The grandparents
are the Rev. and Mrs. Buddy
Brown and Mrs. Roy Bailey.
He was deposed from his office
and prevented from performing
at any clerical function. His
wife and four of his children
having died, he went with the
one remaining child to Lubben,
where he preached and suffered
amidst an uncongenial environ
ment and unappreciative people
until he died.
His hymns are a reflection of
his inner spiritual wealth, many
of them written under condi
tions which would have made
most men cry rather than sing.
We may well learn serenity
through trust from Gerhardt.

The tune "Innsbruch”, accord
ing to German hymnologists was
originally a folk tune that
Heinrich Isaak worked over. The
harmonization used is that of
Bach. This text inspired the
beautiful chorale prelude based
□n this melody that Brahms
wrote on his death-bed.
Heinrich Isaak was the great
est composer in the Germany of
his day. It is believed that he
was Belgian by birth. He became
organist and choirmaster of the
Church of San Giovanni, Flor
ence, and organist and music
master to Lorenzo the Magnifi
cent. Later he was Kapellmeister
at the court of Maximilian at
Vienna. One of the peculiarities
of his work is the frequent ap
pearance of the melody In the
soprano, a comparatively un
usual procedure for the time.
Johann Sebastian Bach has
been legarded by many as the
greatest musical genius of all
time. Very few of his works were
published during his lifetime or
for many years afterwards.
Mendelssohn is responsible for
the so-called Bach revival in
Germany.
This hymn has had many
translations made and may be
found under other names as
"Now Rest Beneath Night’s
Shadow’’, "Now Woods and
Fields are Sleeping”, “O’er Field;
and Forest Stealing”, and "The
Day Hath Now an Ending”.
