The Summerville News, Thursday, January 31, 1963
Business Leaders Hail
Plans for Best Expansion
From Cloudland to Subligna and from Holland to Wel
myer, Chattooga Countians were jubilant last week over
news of Best Mfg. Corp.’s proposed expansions.
“It’s wonderful news,” said John Bankson of Summer
ville, one of Chattooga County’s two members of the Coosa
Valley Planning and Development Commission. “It just
proves that we have the finest people in the world here in
our county and what can come about when the people work
together for the good of all concerned.”
Daniel Lee McWhorter, president of the Summerville In
dustrial Development Corp, and president of the Farmers and
Merchants Bank, said the expansion “should be healthy” for
the county, making possible more employes and increasing
the spending capacity of the county.
Harold Hammond, president of the Triangle Merchants
Assn., said the expansion of Best Mfg. will increase the job
potential of Chattooga County "which is always good for both
labor and business”.
Marshall Lowry, president of the Summerville Retail
Merchants Assn., said he thinks the expansion will be "a
great asset” to the county. "It will help business a great
deal or it should. There will be more money in circulation and
more people will have jobs.”
O. L. Cleckler, Menlo civic and business leader, declared
"we are delighted.” He said he was very pleased that Best
had decided to locate the new plant in Menlo and that he
felt sure the citizens were 100 per cent in support of it.
The president of the Menlo Merchants Assn., said he
expected to have a statement at some future time.
Best has announced it will construct a 20,000-square foot
addition at Menlo, adding from 150 to 200 more employes
there, and will develop a branch in the old Subligna school
building, having from 50 to 150 employes there eventually.
Best presently has about 350 employes.
