SNOW BRINGS DOUBLE BONUS— It was “no school
today” and fun on a sled both Tuesday in Chattooga
County and the three sons of Mr. and Mrs. Winston
McWhorter take advantage of the opportunity. They
are Hilary, 6, (front), Robert, 8 and Winston 10. The
boys are on a sled at the rear of their home in Summer
ville. County schools were closed Wednesday after
a light blanket of snow covered the county Tuesday
night. Trion schools, which have no buses, were in
session. The snow was gone by noon Tuesday but a
severe cold wave hit the area Tuesday night, pushing
temperatures down to 10 in Summerville.
Riegel Profits Up, But
Sales Down for Period
Riegel profits and earnings
were up for the 16-week period
ending Jan. 19 as compared with
the same period last year. Hut
sales were down.
A report to stockholders shows
that the earnings per share of
common stock moved from 55c
to 70c Net income climbed from
$503,577 to $632,513
At the same time, however,
sales fell from $26,750,000 to $22,-
238,000.

Damage Suit
The Town of Trion has filed
suit in Chattooga Superior Court
against Clifford Hancock and
Mrs. Ida B. Harris as admini
strix
The $1,086 suit was filed in
connection with a vehicle colli
sion Feb. 12, 1959 between a
Trion police cur driven by Lee
Kitchens and a car driven by
Clifford Hancock which belong
ed to the late Lester Alton Harris.

Mr. Penland
Dies; Funeral
Held in Polk
Alfred L. Penland Jr., 41, of
Atlanta, formerly of Chattooga
County, died in Atlanta Feb. 3
following a heart attack.
He had lived in Chattooga
most of his life, having only;
recently moved to Atlanta.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs.
R"fh Penland. Atlanta; mother
and step-father, Mr. and Mrs.
cnarles Byrd, Dalias; five sisters,;
Mrs. Alma Angles, Mrs. Mary!
Dispain, Mrs. Martha Ellison,
Atlanta, Mrs. Frances Horsley,
Douglasville, and Mrs. Allen
Flood, Summerville; two broth
ers, Edward Penland, Stone
Mountain, and William H. Pen- |
land.
Interment was at Oakgrove I
Baptist Church, Cedartown, Feb
5. The Rev. Mr. Adams of At- I
lanta officiated.
Motorists
Should Stop
At Siren Blast
Motorists in Summerville are
urged to stop when the siren
goes off. Chief Griffin Pledger
said this week.
He noted that in some cases,
motorists have continued along
the streets, making for a dang
erous situation.

hours are 11 a m. and 7:30 p.m.
Mrs Speir will accompany him

tory in Minneapolis, Minn.

25 years. He speaks all over the I

Spence Heads Easter Seal Drive

I school superintendent, has been
I named as chairman of the 1963
1 Easter Seal campaign in Chat
tooga County.
D. L. McWhorter has accepted
appointment as treasurer.
The 1963 Easter Seal campaign
will be conducted during the
month of March.
Mr. Spence has been school su
perintendent since 1960, having
previously taught school at
Lyerly High, Summerville High
land Trion High. He is a native
of Alabama, attended Alabama
College, Auburn University and
the University of Georgia, holds
bachelor’s and master’s degrees
and is a U. S. Army veteran. He
is the father of two children,
Janice 7 and Bill 5.
