Colombia Calk More
Peace Corp Workers
The success and popularity of
Peace Corps volunteers working
in community action programs]
in Colombia has led the govern
ment to seek Peace Corps as
sistance in another sphere of
activity agricultural extension,
County Agent M. H. Purcell re
ports.
Colombia, the first country in
Latin America to receive Peace
Corps help, now has 167 volun
teers working in rural and urban
community action programs. In
January, 60 volunteers arrived
in Colombia to assist in high
school physical education and
university teaching in English.
Additional volunteers are now in
training to aid in the establish-

Service has developed new and
better agricultural techniques at
its experimental farms. However,
a shortage of personnel had
i made it impossible to pass these

has asked for 100 men and
women with rural backgrounds,
training in agriculture or home
economics, and experience in
farming and homemaking. The

SCORES
‘EXCELLENT’
The Chattooga High School
Band received an “excellent"
rating Friday at the District In
strumental Festival at Carters
ville.
It was entered in Class C. The
rating is next to the top.
All four judges granted the
"excellent” status to the CHS
band, which scored high in
sight reading. The average band
scores a grade lower in sight
reading tha n in the other
phases, noted Director Jack
Raines.
Here are some of the com
ments of the/judges: “. . . you
have the confidence it takes to
sight read; you also have a well
disciplined band ... it is a
pleasure to see and hear them
play”; “a quite breathless es-
Ifect ... all notes played quite
well”; “many pleasant mo
ments”; “the band does so many
things well”.
In addition, said Mr. Raines,
the judges granted some con
structive criticism which the di
rector plans to use to good ad
vantage.
CERAMICS
SCHEDULE
CHANGED
Ceramics instruction will be
underway today (Thursday)
from 1 to 8:30 p.m. at the Sum
merville Recreation Center.
The classes will be given on
these hours each v.eek. The only
other time ceramics may be
worked on at the Recreation
Center is on Mondays and
Wednesdays from 3 to 6 p.m.
when hobbyists may use the
kiln. However, no instruction
will be giv?n on these dates.
A ceramics show and sale are
being planned for May.

and know-how to the Immediate
problems facing the small farmer
or campesino.
Selected volunteers will receive
12 weeks of special training in
agricultural extension and com
munity development methods at
the Peace Corps Training Center
at the University of New Mexico.
Twelve hours of college credit
will be awarded for the training
course which will also include
Latin American studies. Spanish.
U. S. History, health and physical
education. The first fifty volun
teers will begin training in April,
the second in June.
Married couples are encourag
ed to apply if they have no chil
dren under 18. both are willing to
serve as full-scale volunteers
and both have skills which can
be used on the project.

Goes Through Sun.

Baptists in Ohio, is the speaker. <
Services are held at 10:30 a.m.

A “Pack-the-Pews” program
will be held tonight, Friday and 1
Saturday nights, with different i
departments of the Sunday
School in charge.
Sunday will be “High Attend
' ance Day” in Sunday School
and Training Union. A church- I
wide prayer meeting will be
held at 9:15 a.m. Sunday in the
church auditorium. Sunday
School will he held from 9:45 to
10:20 a.m. and a worship serv
ice will be held at 10:30 a.m.
Dr. Stigler has announced
that the Cowboy Copas family,
Grand Ole Opry entertainers
who suffered a recent tragedy I
when two members died in an ]
airplane crash, may be present
for the 10:30 am. service. Dr.
Stigler is a close friend of the
family, having pastored their
church for some 10 years.

CORN PRODUCTION DOWN
Corn production in Georgia is
expected to be down by 21 per
cent from last year’s record pro
duction, according to the Geor
gia Crop Reporting Service. The
corn crop is forecast at 51,900,-
000 bushels. About 150,000 fewer
acres will be harvested, and the
yield is expected to be about 30
bushels per acre, compared with
35 bushels last year.

Dunsons Aged f
Employee
Dies Tuesday
Jake Sherwood, 93, an em
ploye of the A. G. Dunsons for
some 40 years, died Tuesday at
his residence.
A native of Conyers, Jake
came to Summerville with the
Dunsons from LaGrange in 1945
and he and his wife occupied
an apartment on the Dunson
premises on East Washington
Street. Until some 10 years ago, I
the colored man had worked at
Summerville Mfg. Co., of which
Mr. Dunson is general manager, j
Survivors include his wife and
several nephews and nieces.
Funeral services will be in
Conyers.
