Nicaraguan Visitor Saw
Communism First Hand
Chattooga County has as
a visitor for two weeks a Bap
tist minister from Nicaragua
—a man who has seen com
munism in action first hand.
He is the Rev. Victor Estrada,
the guest of the Rev. Frank
Rosser, of Summerville, mission
ary to Nicaragua.
The two ministers arrived Fri
day. Although the Nicaraguan
minister will return in two
weeks, the Rev. Mr. Rosser will
remain here until school is out
next June because of the ill
health of his wife. Mrs. Rosser
has been here for several
months.
The Rev. Mr. Estrada, a na
tive of Guatemala, was in that
country when it was in the
hands of communists. He notes
that seven of his friends were'
taken from their stores one
night to a cemetery where they
were shot.
On another occasion, he points
out, the communist dictator an
nounced via radio that he was
resigning. Many people were so
overjoyed that they demon
strated in the streets. However,
the radio announcement was a
trick and those who were jubi
lant were rounded up and shot.
This is the 30-year-old min
ister’s first visit to the States
and he admits he is somewhat
surprised at the hospitality
shown him.
He had had the impression
that many “North Americans’’
were inconsiderate and not in
terested in Latin Americans.
However, he said, he can now tell
his fellow South Americans that
this isn’t so.
The pastor also has been im
pressed with the machinery and
the fast pace of life in this coun
try.
The Rev. Mr. Rosser, who is
his interpreter, says the Rev.
Mr. Estrada was amazed, for in
stance, at coin changing ma
chines which he saw in some of
the larger cities. In Summerville,
he was impressed at a knot tying
machine which he saw in op
eration at a small factory on
Dry Valley Road during a tour
of the facility.
While in the States, the min
ister will visit Chattanooga, At
lanta and various churches in
this part of the state. He and
the Rev. Mr. Rosser were at
the Pennville Baptist Church
Wednesday night, for instance.
He points out that they deliver
a sermon in two languages,
Spanish which he speaks and
the English with which Mr.
Rosser interprets.
The young minister, who has
a wife back home, is pastor of
the Calvary Baptist Church in
Managua, Nicaragua, a city of
235,000. It was the first church

LOOKING AT NEWSPAPER
. . . Rev. Estrada, Rev. Rosser
founded by the Rossers when
they went to Nicaragua five
years ago.
For the three Sundays prior to
the trip to the States, the Rev.
Mr. Estrada’s church had 178,
204 and 262 at Sunday School.
A Roman Catholic until 10
years ago, the minister studied
at the Central American Bible
Institute, graduating in 1958. He
owned his own business, making
leather suitcases, prior to be
coming a minister.
The bounty of food and
clothing in this country has
greatly impressed the visitor.
Poverty is still a problem in his
country, points out the Rev. Mr.
Rosser. The missionary, who has
already taken or sent many
goods to the South Americans,
plans a clothing drive, hoping
to send at least 100 barrels of
clothing. He notes that children
sometimes appear at church
minus any clothing at all.
Communism often appeals to
the poverty-ridden, said the
missionary, because they feel
they have nothing to lose and
communism promises them so
much.
Both he and the visiting min
ister feel, however, that commu
nism is being rather well con
trolled Nicaragua, which has
an anti-communist government.
Wheh" CS'stro first went into
power 'in Cuba, it gave commu
nists in other Latin American
countries much encouragement
and more converts. However, as
more and more people learn it
isn’t working out as promised
they are less inclined to follow
the communist promises.
The Rev. Mr. Rosser is a na
tive Chattooga Countian who,
with his family, went to Latin
America seven years ago as a
missionary.
REVALUATION
(Continued From Page 1)
After the new tax program
goes into effect, would it be nec
essary to secure a permit in case
you wanted to build another
room onto the dwelling or make
other improvements?
Although no action has yet
been taken on this matter, it is
expected that some system of
permits will be needed in order
for the county to keep up with
improvements made to property.
DOWN THE DRAIN
Los Angeles—John Parris and
his wife were riding along dis
cussing which car to buy.
Parris wanted one kind his wife
another.
To stress her point, she ges
tured with the sack indicating
that to buy the car her husband
wanted was like throwing money
away.
Out the bag went and landed
in a storm drain 15 feet below
the surface of the ground. While
trying to fish it out a nearby
filling station washed down the
driveway and the water carried
the sack and money away.
They drove away in silence.
