Future growth of shrubs often
depends upon the selection of a
proper planting site Consider
these points before deciding
where to plant shrubs:
House Overhang Don't plant
underneath eave of house unless
you are willing to water the
shrubs frequently
Drainage Don't plant shrubs
tn any location in the yard where
there is poor drainage and where
the soil is always wet This is
especially true for azaleas and
camellias In foundation plant
ings don't plant underneath
dram-spout openings unless a
method is used to dram water
away from the shrubs

shrubs do well in either sun or
light shade, while others are

low rooted trees, such as elm.
will result in water deficiency
during a great deal of the grow
ing season unless the shrubs are
carefully watered.
Winter Protection The most
practical approach for protect
ing semi-hardy shrubs from cold
injury is to select a protected
planting site in the yard. Many
azaleas and camellias which
were killed last winter would
have survived if they had been
in the proper location in the
same yard
Attempt to locate azaleas and
camellias so that they obtain
light winter shade during a good
portion of the day The type of
shade provided by pine trees is
ideal Protection from other
kinds of trees, shrubs and near
by buildings may be taken ad
vantage of also If no other win
ter shade is available. azaleas
and camellias may be planted on
the north side of the house for
winter protection Avoid open
southern or eastern exposures
for these plants.
