The Minister
Speaks . . .
THE REV. EARL W. HALL,
r
Pastor, Trion Presbyterian
Church
The Bible is a book of prom
ises. Tiie Christian faith is based
on these promises. By reading
the Bible we can see how God is
fulfilling His promises.
Tire word “promise" means to
send before. A promise is an
agreement to do something or
not to do something. But the
Latin word that forms the base
of our English word ‘‘promise’’
means to “send before.”
‘‘For as the rain and the snow
came down from heaven, and
return not thither but water the
earth, making it bring forth and
sprout, giving seed to the sower
and bread to the eater, so shall
my word be that goes forth from
my mouth.” (Isaiah 55:10-11.)
God is speaking here of his
word, and He says “It shall not
return to me empty, but it shall
accomplish that which I pur
pose. and prosper in the thing
for which I sent it.”
He has sent forth His word.
He has made His promise. And it
shall not return to Him empty.
We can say, beyond a shadow of
doubt, that God’s promises have
been fulfilled, are being fulfilled,
and will be fulfilled.
Tlte major promise that we
find In the Old Testament Scrip
tures is the promise to Abraham,
the Great Covenant. This prom
ise is the one to which the
Apostle Paul looked when he
wrote to the Galatians. In that
epistle he says,
“And if you are Christ’s, then
you are Abraham's offspring,
heirs according to promise.”
In verses one and two of the |
fifteenth chapter of Genesis, we
read that the Lord said to.
Abram:
"Go from your country and
your kindred and your father’s
house to the land I will show
you. And I will make’ of you a
great nation, and by you all the
families of the earth will bless
themselves.”
God promised to make Abra
ham the father of a great nation ;
and. through his faith, to grant
the opportunity of blessing to all
nations. As Paul says, “We are
heirs according to the promise." ,
Someone has said that the
great promises of the Old Testa- ।
ment Scriptures point to Christ,
and the great promises of Christ ;
point to heaven. Which brings
to mind the story of the little
boy who became curious about
the Bible
"Mother." he said, “is this
God’s book?”
"Why, yes," the mother re
plied
"Well,'' the boy said, “we’d
better send it back to God, be
cause we re not using it.”
There are many homes like
that today, and Christians ought
to be concerned about it. For
the Bible is truly the book of
God’s promises to you and me
In addition to the Covenant with
Abraham, there is the Covenant
with the Children of Israel, as
found in the Book of Deuteron-I
omy Tins promise is like a two-!
edged sword. If the Israelites
obeyed the commandments of
God. they would be blessed. If
they did not obey, they would be
cursed.
It is the promise to Abraham
that Christians claim as their
very own. Paul points out that
all who rely on the works of the
law arc under a curse. We sim
ply do not have it within us to
make ourselves righteous. Gur
righteousness is in Christ Jesus,
and in Him only.
In Isaiah we read that a judge
would come out of the stem of
Jesse, in the passage which is
justly called the high point of
the Old Testament Scriptures,
we read that a Suffering Serv
ant would redeem his people. We!
find these words in the 53rd
chapter of Isaiah:
"By his knowledge shall the ।
righteous one my servant, make
many to be accounted righteous:
and he shall bear their iniq
uities.”
The promises given in the Old
Testament Scriptures dearly
point to Christ And this same
Jesus, who died for our sins to
redeem us from spiritual death,
lives In the hearts of his people
It is his promises, the promise
of our Lord Jesus Christ, which
point the way from the cross to
heaven.
