Indians Feel Sting of
Calhoun Girl Champs
By RONALD TAYLOR
The Chattooga High Indian squaws suffered their
most embarrassing loss of the season Friday night losing
to the girls’ Region 3-AA North champs, the Calhoun
Jackettes, 100-33.
The boys had equally bad luck but held the margin to
22 points as the Jackets took a
71-49 victory.
In the girls’ game, a 23-6 first
quarter score gave indication of
the nightmare the Indian
Squaws were to suffer. Twenty
nine points by the Jackettes in
the second quarter allowed them
to walk off the court with an
amazing 52-15 lead.
The Jackettes continued their
massacre in the third quarter
with their greatest rally of the
night, 37 points. The Indians'
eight only eased the embarrass
ment, and Calhoun entered the
fourth quarter on the upper end
of an 87-33 score.
The substitutes finally came
into the game and proved equal
ly invincible. Their 11 points
gave their team its 100-point
total and a 100-33 victory.
Marilyn Bryant continued to
carry the offensive lead, scoring
24 points. She received support
from Kay Baker with five points
and Marcia Boney with four.
The male segment of the In
dian team allowed the Jackets to
take a quick and decisive lead.

quarter of the night saw them

Summerville Girls Lose Out In
Second Round of Tournament
Summerville’s 13 - and - under
girls’ team took the first round
in the Seventh District tourna
ment at Calhoun Saturday but
fell by the wayside in the sec
ond go.
The girls handsomely defeated
Dalton 19-9 in the first of the
series, but lost to Alto Park of
Floyd County in the second
event 25-2.
Sandra Vernon with 7 and
Nancy Marks with 6 led Surh
merville scoring in the first
game.
A series of mishaps, plus op

went on to become champion of
the day, brought about Summer
ville’s downfall in the second
game.
In the meantime, the girls are
getting ready to take on their
mothers in a Feb. 28 event that
should be interesting. Admis
sion will be charged to this
game, the money to be used to

Before You
Retire, Inquire,
Advises SS
“Inquire before you retire.”
The social security office ad
vises folks who are planning re
tirement to find out ahead of
time how much they can expect
from social security and what
papers they will need to bring
with them when they apply for
social security benefits.
“By inquiring before you re
tire”, says H. Marvin Boatwright,
social security district manager
in Rome, “you help us to get your
social security payment to you
promptly when you claim your
old-age insurance benefits. You
can, for example, find out
whether you already have on
hand a record that may be good
enough to prove your age.”
Proof of age was cited by Mr.
Boatwright as one problem that
can usually be overcome by
checking with the social security
office before retirement. Many
people worry needlessly because
no public record of their birth
was made; this is true of many
who are now reaching retire
ment age, Mr. Boatwright said,
because less than 45 percent of
births in the United States be
tween 1890 and 1920 were re
ported. But there are many
other records that can be used
to establish proof of age, and
most people have at least one.

About Chattooga High
Lunchroom Participation Said
‘Good’; Manager Needs Office
Although participation in the lunchroom program at Chat
tooga High School is “good", a committee composed of students,
faculty and administrative personnel is needed to study ways of
making it higher. The proposed committee also would study other
problems
So said a group evaluating the high school last spring.
The percentage of participation at the time was 66 per cent
and this is good for a high school, it was stated.
The school was commended for not having other foods and
drinks available at the school and the committee said the repu
tation of the food standards among the students, faculty and com
munity is “outstanding". The good relationship between the school
lunch personnel and the faculty and students also was commended.
Seven suggestions were made for further improving the lunch
room program:
1. Further training of personnel to improve the understanding
of requirements and goals of the school lunch program.
2. Extensive efforts through various channels of communica
tion to better inform the community of the value of the program.
3. A need for improvement of the dining area in cleanliness
and attractiveness to improve the esthetic quality. Provision for
storage of books and clothing is needed to improve sanitation.
4. There is a need for the faculty to use the many possibilities
of the lunchroom as a laboratory for teaching civic pride, manners,
nutrition, science and correlating it with the instructional program.
5. All students should be assigned a lunch hour with atten
tion given toward the proximity to the noon hour or normal time
for meals.
6. There is a need for the school lunch manager to be pro
vided with enclosed office space adjacent to kitchen and service
entrance with good view of the kitchen.
7. A committee composed of students, faculty and adminis
trative personnel is needed to study problems of the lunchroom.
Including representatives of the community should be considered.
Ways and means of securing higher participation should be studied.
