Blevins
Trial May
Soon Be Set
Trial of James Blevins, charged
with the Easter Sunday slaying
of a Walker County couple, may
be held in early March or early
April, Sol. Gen. Earl B. Self, of
Summerville, said this week.
Mr. Self said he assumed trial
could be set now that the Geor
gia Supreme Court has turned
down the defense’s latest appeal
effort. The Court this week
notified Self that it had denied
Blevins' appeal for a writ of
certorarl.
Self said he would have to
confer with Judge S. W. Fariss
about the date for the trial.
Lakes To
Get Water
Ma rkers
Boat operators on Georgia’s
lakes will be seeing a set of new
waterway markers this summer
under a regulation just adopted
by the State Game and Fish
Commission.
The new regulation sets up a
uniform system of "signs” on the
water, similar in function to
common road signs. The mark
ers are designed to prevent acci
dents on the water and to help
boaters find their way.
Under an agreement with the
State Game and Fish Commis
sion, the U-S Army Corps of
Engineers will begin installing
and maintaining the new mark
ers on the 6 Corps lakes in
Georgia, including Allatoona,
.' Clark Hill, Fort Gaines, Hart
■ well, Lanier and Seminole.

Garbage Cans
Must Have
Lids—Council
Rigid enforcement of the gar
bage ordinance in Summerville
was ordered by the mayor and
council Monday night.
All garbage cans should be of
the regulation type and must
have lids, it was pointed out.
A trend toward open-top con
tainers was the reason for the
re-affirmation of the ordinance,
it was noted. With warm weather
on the way, officials said, this
simply cannot be tolerated for
the sake of health in the commu
nity.
The officials called upon all
citizens and business people to
cooperate.

way trailers are loaded via such ramps
onto railroad flat cars for transporta
tion. This concrete ramp will replace a
portable ramp which has been in use at
Lyerly for some months.
Lyerly may be on its way to
becoming the “piggyback” load
ing and unloading center” of
this area.
A permanent ramp for this
service is nearing completion at
the Central of Georgia Railway
depot there.
Henry Duke, freight agent,
said that while Georgia Rug
Mill is presently the only user
of this service, it is hoped that
more firms throughout the area
will take advantage of it.
Under the system, highway
trailers are hauled on railroad
flat cars.
Bigelow-Sanford, Inc., parent
firm of Georgia Rug, was a pio
neer in piggyback service in the
South. In June, 1963, the first
rail trailers were shipped into
Lyerly, but as early as February,
1962 they were used out of Chat
tanooga and Greenville, S. C.
Rolls of jute carpet backing,
manufactured in India and
shipped through the port of
Savannah, are moved on piggy
back to Lyerly. Finished rolls of
carpet are then shipped out of
Lyerly via piggyback to the
Bigelow warehouses at Chicago,
111., Dallas, Tex. and Hacken
sack, N. J.
The advantages of this service
are high volume shipments at
reasonable freight rates, plus
rapid service, a Georgia Rug
spokesman said.
Dreams are not what success
ful businesses are made of, un
fortunately.
