Leonard Kenneth Mavity, a
teacher at LaFayette High
School who has studied and
taught in Mexico, will be the
guest speaker at the Summerville
Elementary Parent-Teacher
Assn. Founders’ Day p r o g r a m
Tuesday night.
The meeting will be at 7:30
p.m. at the school. A nursery will
be provided. The executive com
mittee will meet at 2 p.m. Tues
day.
Mr. Mavity, a native of Walker
County, was president of the
Baptist Seminary of Mexico from
1958 until 1961 when he became
associated with LaFayette High.
He was an associate pastor and
educational director between
1944 and 1956. While in Mexico,
he worked in child guidance.
The spe a k e r’s educational
background includes studies at
the University of Mexico in 1958,
a B.D. degree from Southern
Baptist Seminary, an M.R.E.
from Southwestern Baptist Theo
logical Seminary, and an A.B.
from Mississippi College. He also
has studied at George Peabody
College, Berry College and
Shorter College.
Mr. Mavity completed a course
at the U.S. Counter-Intelligence
Corps Center, Baltimore, Md., in
1946.
At LaFayette High, he teaches
Spanish and General Science.

Retires
At Trion PO
James H. fJim) Leath has re
tired from the Trion Post Office
after 20 years postal service.
Fellow workers entertained
.him and Mrs. Leath at a dinner
at Riegeldaie Tavern Friday
evening.
Mr. Leath entered the postal
service in 1944 as a war service
substitute. He later became a
regular city carrier and finally
a postal clerk.
Mr. Leath served in the U. S.
Army Air Force from 1942 until
1943 when he was discharged for
disability. He had previously
worked in the slasher room at
Riegel and had taught school for
two years.
He is a member of the Riegel
Memorial Methodist Church,
and a past commander of the
Seventh District American Le
gion and American Legion Post
129.
Mr. and Mrs. Leath have three
daughters, Mrs. Betty Wilhelm,
Mrs. Carolyn Stewart and Mrs.
Jimmie Ash, and seven grand
children.
He hopes to spend his retire
ment days fishing and gar
dening, his two favorite hobbies.
Mr. Leath says he also will con
tinue his activities in the church
and community.

HOG CHOLERA DECLINING
Georgia’s Hog Cholera Eradi
cation Program was started in
May, 1962. There are 103 coun
ties in the state with no history
of cholera since that time. From
May to December of 1963 there
were only 91 confirmed cases of
hog cholera in Georgia. During
the previous 12 months there
were 248 acres.
