Sanders Still
Says ‘Not So’
Some people—and that ini
cludes so m e newsmen—j us t
won't take “No” for an answer.
But Gov. Carl E. Sanders keeps
right on offering it just the same.
For example, just the other
day the Governor repeated for
the umpsteen time that he is
not a candidate for any office at
the present time, that he will not
accept a vice presidential draft
and that he will not accept an
appointment as U. S. attorney
general.
He also reiterated, in response
to newsmen’s queries regarding
recurrent rumors of his future
' plans, that there is no justifica
i tion for rumors that he will op
pose Richard B. Russell for the
U. S. Senate in 1966.
“I am not going to accept any
; appointments in Washington,”
Gov. Sanders said emphatically,
“I intend to fill out my term as,
governor. When I am through,,
the people can determine if my
administration has been worth
while.
■‘l am not trying to win any
popularity contest. And number
two, I am not trying to mold a
political organization for my
self.”
Gov Sanders said Georgia's
117 delegates and alternates to
the National Democratic Con
vention in Atlantic City Aug. 24-
28, whose 53 state votes are
pledged to President Lyndon B.
Johnson, will be named within a
few days.
“I hope and believe Georgia
will remain in th Democratic
fold.” Gov. Sanders declared, in
reminding one and all that he is
a Democratic governor. “ I think
Georgia is going to remain Dem
ocratic."
