Countian Takes College Work
Before Ending High School
BY CAROLYN JACKSON
A young Menlo student will have a rare advantage over his
fellow classmates when he enters college in the fall of 1966.
David Bailey, a rising Chattooga High School senior, has
been permitted a taste of college through Shorter College's
program for advanced pupils far enough in advance to allow
; him to take advantage of it.
David was one of about a dozen students chosen in the area
to take courses in regular college classes for valid credit this
, i summer. Each Floyd County school plus one in several sur
rounding counties sent participants.
“Most high school students need to know how to learn with
out simply memorizing,” said David. “Exams are hard here
and I didn’t know exactly what to study for in one course.”
The students were allowed to choose their courses from a
I roster of lower division courses. David chose an introductory
i world history course and one in religion. He is the son of the
Rev. and Mrs. Dewey Bailey, his father being pastor of the
Menlo Methodist Church.
David was the only one of the group to live in a dormitory.
The rest commuted. However, Shorter President Randall
1 Minor warned the students that dorm life was not as active
in the summer and could be very misleading. Campus extra
curricula activities slow to a much lazier pace for the hot
1 months.
A member of the Spanish and Library Clubs and newly
elected Beta Club president, David said he planned some extra
activities once he gets to college on a bona fide status but “not
too many.”
Possibly, he will return to Shorter for his first years of col
lege, he says. Shorter is the only school which flatly recog
nizes the credit, but according to Dr. Minor, others have indi
f cated that they will accept it.
David plans a major political science, maybe to teach.
Meanwhile, he will return to Chattooga High this fall to put
1 his newly learned knowledge to work and to share it with his
fellow classmates.
