Pursuant to the new Health
ho e ’ Ge °rgia Laws 1964, Page
512, the following persons are
appointed by this Grand Jury to
the Chattooga County Board of
Health: Mayor J. R. Dowdy to
serve a term concurrent with his
term as Mayor of the City of
Summerville, which term shall
be from this date until January
1, 1965: Roy Camp for a term of
four (4) years from this date;
and Dr. H. A. Goodwin, who is a
Chattooga County Physician ac
tively practicing, for a term of
six (6) years from this date.
We. the members of the Grand
Jury by committee, inspected
the Chattooga County jail and
found the same to be clean and
in good order. However, In the
jail we found that cornice
boards are needed, and the
woodwork needs painting. The
door screens need repairing; and
the juvenile and women’s cell
needs a shower repaired. Tile is
needed in the jail office, and a
shower is needed in the south
west cell. The dishwashing room
in the jail is in need of a faucet,
and this Grand Jury recom
mends that these repairs be
made.
We, the members of the Grand
Jury by committee, inspected the
courthouse and found the same
to be generally clean and in
good order. We found six or
eight books in the Clerk’s office
which should be rebound. The
door to the County School Su
perintendent’s southwest room is
in need of repair. We recom
mend that these repairs be
made.
We, the members of the Grand
Jury by committee, inspected the
Chattooga County Home, and
found the same to be clean and
in good order. However, the out
side front porch needs painting
and repairing. The appearance
and interior of the home is in
very good condition. We found
that the water used in the home
has certain foreign matter in it,
and we recommend that the
Health Department look into
this immediately. We recom-
Inend that all repairs herein
recommended be made.
We, the members of the Grand
Jury by committee, inspected
the Public Works Camp, and
found the same to be clean and
in good order. There is now, in
the camp, 18 white felony pris
oners, and 18 colored felony
prisoners. There are 12 white
misdemeanor prisoners and one
colored misdemeanor prisoner.
There is a roach bug problem in
the kitchen which should be
corrected, and we found that
the present method of washing
clothes is hard on the clothes,
and wears them out, and we,
therefore, recommend that a
washing machine be purchased
for the work camp.
We. the members of the Grand
Jury by committee, inspected the
Chattooga County Health Cen
ter, and found it to be clean and
in good order. However, the
plaster in the X-ray room is
cracked, and we recommend that
the same be repaired.
We, the members of the Grand
Jury by committee, inspected
the Chattooga County Hospital,
and found same to be clean and
in good order with the excep
tions hereinafter noted: A new
sterilizer is badly needed; a new
examining table is needed; a
new oxygen tent is needed: ade
quate lighting in all spaces,
especially in the operating room
should be provided; a platform
rocker for babies should be pro
vided; a call system from the
nurses station to the remainder
of the hospital should be in
stalled; filing cabinets in the
X-ray room are needed badly; a
positive pressure machine should
be provided; storage space for
maintenance equipment should
be provided; enough money
should be kept on hand to pay
for supplies.
We, the members of the Grand
Jury, feel that the whole finan
cial structure and operation of
our County Hospital should be
re-evaluated and new policies
and methods be substituted for
those presently used where they
would result in a more eco
nomical and better operated
hospital. We realize that our
citizens need a hospital, but feel
that we are entitled for the same
to be operated in an economi
cally but up-to-date manner. We
also feel that should our hos
pital be completely air condi
tioned that we would attract
enough extra patients to pay for
its installation and upkeep. We
also feel that if needed to carry
into effect the previous recom
mendations, the present Board
resign and a new Board be ap
pointed.
We, the members of the Grand
Jury, have been continuously
interrupted in our deliberations
by the constant flow of traffic
on the streets of Summerville,
and hereby recommend that^n,
air conditioner be installed
the Grand Jury Room prior to
the next meeting of the Grand
Jury, so that the windows may
be closed, and allow the Grand
Jury to consider Bills of Indict
ment, and other matters that
come before it, without the con
stant and annoying interrup
tions of said traffic.
We, the members of the Grand
Jury, recommend that the Clerk
of this Grand Jury be paid one
extra day’s pay for his extra
services in keeping the records
es this Grand Jury.
We, the members of this
Grand Jury, recommend that
the typist be paid $7.50. for
typing these presentments.
We, the members of this
Grand Jury, recommend that
these presentments be published
one time In The Summerville
News at the expense of the
County, as provided by law.
This 15th day of July, 1964.

said. The field is being made
ready at the present time.
Mr. Raines says the size of the
band will be comparable to that

diligent practice and individual (
