Thanksgiving
Day
Thanksgiving Day is peculiarly
our own. It was born on our soil
when in 1621 the Puritans of
Massachusetts set apart a Day
of Thanksgiving.
It is not easy for us to think
back to that date. At that time
there was very little settlement
of human beings, mostly Indians,
and a vast forest in New Eng
land. The Pilgrims wanted free
dom, space in which to exercise
it. and they had endured en
numerable hardships for it.
During the first winter of suf
fering, privation, sickness and
death, more 'than half of the
original number was lost and the
dead were buried by night so
that the Indians would not be
aware of the colony’s dwindling
numbers. After a yielding spring
and summer, Governor Bradford
of the Pilgrim settlement at
Plymouth ordered a three-day
feast and celebration in October.
This was the first American
Thanksgiving.
Until 1863. Thanksgiving Day
was observed now and then. That
year, the fourth Thursday in No
vember was set aside as the of
ficial Thanksgiving Day and has
been observed as such ever since.
We associate pumpkin pie.
going to Grandmother’s house,
turkey and cranberry sauce with
this date. Birds flying further
south and harvested fields re
mind us, during this time of the
year, that once again it is time
to give thanks to the Creator
who has so richly blessed us and
the nation in which we live.
The words from the Doxology
are so appropriate at this time,
"Praise God from Whom ail
blessings flow.” Let us bear this
in mind as we again celebrate
our famous Thanksgiving Day
this year.

IWAS WARNED
about the CHURCH OF CHRIST
My friends and relatives were shocked when they heard
I was studying the Bible to become a member of the church
of Christ—a ‘Christian’ only.
I realize now that they were completely sincere and
honest as they attempted to show me the mistake I would
be making By studying the Bible I have found that the
things they believed about the church of Christ are not so.
If they had been so, I truly would have been making a serious
mistake.
My friends and relatives have sent me various pamphlets
and tracts which contained conflicting and confusing teach
ings about the church, baptism, Christian worship and other
topics. There were, in these pamphlets, a number of quota
tions from catechisms, prayer books, and other creeds of
uninspired men. All of these seemed to say that whatever
any man believes to be true, is true.
But I have come to know through a study of the scrip
ture that the Word of God, the Bible, is the only divinely
recognized authority in Christianity. Hence, I am now a
convert to Christ and therefore a member of His church,
the church of Christ. Matt. 16:18.

grand total of $1,356.31 toward
our new intercom system. How
ever. CHS will only get $563.85.

favor. Robert Norton was the
high scorer for the game with
22 points. Charlie Lowery had 10.
