FIRST PLACE WINNER — This attrac

ter School in Summerville won first
place in the Summerville parade. The
prize was $25. Scores of students worked
The colorful A. C. Carter School float won first place in
the Summerville Christmas parade Saturday afternoon.
It received $25.
Second place went to a group of “Indians” riding ponies
—Pattie, Donna and Brian Wood
and Rosita Chevremont. They
received sls. Third place went
to Santa’s sleigh and fourth
place went to Randy Searels,
six-year-old “horseman.’,’ The
last two received $lO each.
Fred Aldred. Mrs. Roy Mann
and Mrs. Ozella Shankles were
judges.

Gala Summerville Parade Ushers in Yule Season

The winning float was a
“house” of red imitation brick
paper with a chimney on which
“Santa” was mounted. Santa
Claus had been made and stuffed
by students of the Home Eco
nomics Department. Others
working on the project were
Misses B. Greene, J. Stewart, M.
Walker and E. Allgood, as well
as numerous students.

Funeral Held
Tuesday For
Mrs. Cherry
Mrs. Texas Gray Cherry, 81, a
resident of 46 Moore Street,
Trion, died at an early hour
Monday. She was a life-long
resident of Chattooga County
and a oioneer employee of the
Weave Room at Trion. She was a
member of the New Hope North
Baptist Church.
Surviving are three step
daughters, Mrs. Dewey Plunkett,
Trion; Mrs. Paul Fillers, LaFay
ette, and Mrs. Henry Miller,
Summerville; sister, Mrs. Exa
Ford, Atlanta; seven grandchil
dren; eleven great-grandchil
dren and a number of nieces and
nephews.
Funeral services were held
Tuesday at 2:00 o’clock at the
chapel of the Erwin Funeral
Home with the Rev. Frank B.
Lewis and the Rev. A. A. Tanner
officiating, with burial in Mace
donia Cemetery.
Pallbearers were grandsons.
Erwin Funeral Home was in
'harge of the arrangements. -
Mrs. Hawkins
Dies Friday
Mrs. Rosa Cargle Hawkins,
age 81. died at 12:10 a.m. Friday.
Mrs. Hawkins had spent the
greater part of her life in Chat
tooga County and was preceded
in death by her husband, the
late Mr. J. M. Hawkins on April
27, 1952. Surviving are: Four
daughters, Mrs. Bessie Scoggins,
Summerville; Mrs. Avalon Mitch
ell, Lyerly; Mrs. Jewell Elling
ton, Columbia, S. C., and Mrs.
Catherine Peppers, LaFayette; 4
sons, John and Virgel Hawkins
both of Summerville; Milton
Hawkins, Ashborn, Ga., and
Dorsey W. Hawkins, Rebecca,
Ga.; 34 grandchildren and 29
great grandchildren also survive.
Mrs. Hawkins was a member
of South Summerville Baptist
Church where funeral services
will be held Sunday at 2 p.m.
with Rev. Robert Smith, her pas
tor, and Rev. A. A. Tanner offi
ciating. Interment in family lot
of Pleasant Grove Baptist
Church Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be
grandsons. Honorary pallbear
ers who are asked to assemble at
the Church Sunday at 1:50 p.m.
are: Bill Coker, Grady Johnson,
Bill Hawkins, Leonard Owens,
Roy Hawkins, Julius Coulter,
Milton Sprayberry, Dennis Chan
dler, Tom Mahaffey, Melvin
Plunkett, Fred Stewart, Yancey
Gilmer, Melvin Cargle, Eugene
Mathis, Paul Waltz.
Mrs. Hawkins will be in state
at the J. D. Hill Funeral Home
after 2 p.m. Saturday and the
family will receive friends there
from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. J. D.
Hill Funeral Home in charge.
Pfc. Greene Engages
In Korean Maneuver
Army PFC Daniel W. Greene,
24, whose wife, Nancy, lives at
937 Quinlan Drive, Macon, and
other members of the 7th In
fantry Division participated in
Exercise FLYING TACKLE, a
four-day field training exercise
held in Korea, which ended
Nov. 20.
Greene, an assistant gunner in
Battery A, 4th Battalion of the
division’s 76th Artillery, received
extensive training in defensive
maneuvers against aggressive j
attacking forces under simulated
combat conditions.
The son of Mr. and Mrs. Pearson
R Greene, 311 Bittings Avenue,
Summerville, he entered the
Army in September 1963, com
pleted basic training at Fort
Gordon, and arrived overseas |
last September.
He is a 1959 graduate of, Trion
High School and was employed
by Georgia State Patrol in Dal
ton, before entering the Army.

County Tax
Due Dec. 20
Chattooga County taxpayers
are reminded that their annual
property taxes are due by De
cember 20.
Notices were sent out several
weeks ago.
The taxes should be paid at
Tax Collector Emmett Clarkson’s
office.
In the meantime, Mr. Clarkson
has disclosed he will again be
the tag agent for Chattooga
County and tags will be available
Jan. 1 and thereafter at his
office.

Expresses
Appreciation
Grady McCalmon this week
expressed his appreciation “to
the many people who coop
erated” in the Summerville Rec
reation Dept, program during his
tenure.
Mr. McCalmon left Tuesday to
assume his neV duties as super
intendent of the City of Griffin
Recreation Dept. He had served
as head of the City of Summer
ville program for the past three
years.
"I have enjoyed my association
with the people here,” Mr. Mc-
Calmon said, “and especially ap
preciate the cooperation of the
public, the city officials, the rec
reation board, school, church,
civic and business leaders. It was
a pleasure to work with all of
you.”
Mr. McCalmon received a pro
motion in going to Griffin,
where he will have 12 full-time
staff members working under
him.
