was that of Mrs. Cora
Mitchell and Wesley Scruggs
which took place Saturday
evening.
Mrs. Hattie Holland is re
cuperating at the home of
her sister, Mrs. J. H. Hen
drix, after several days in
the local hospital.
The W.M.S. of the New
Bethel Baptist Church en
tertained Mrs. Deed Lancas
ter and Mrs. Lonnie Talley
with a birthday supper at
the home of Mrs. Lancaster
Thursday evening. A large
group was present.
Mrs. Phil Culli and Mrs.
Dena Roebuck, of Gadsden,
were spend-the-night guests
of Mr. and Mrs. Deed Lan
caster Thursday night and
attended the birthday sup
per given for Mrs. Lancas
ter and Mrs. Talley.

Mitchell, Fay and Jean were
visiting Mr. and Mrs. Ronny
Mitchell Sunday and at
tended services at the Halls

Gardner
Bryant Dies
In Texas
Alfred Gardner Bryant,
50, resident of Dallas, Texas,
for a number of years, died
there in a Veterans Hospital
at 2:15 p.m. Friday.
Mr. Bryant was a veteran
of World War 2. He served
in the European Theater
with the U. S. Army and was
supply sergeant. He was a
member of the Baptist
Church in Ennis, Texas. Mr.
Bryant had his training as a
linotype operator with The
Chattanooga Times and was
employed with The Sum
merville News and the Rome
News-Tribune before going
to Dallas where he was em
ployed with a newspaper.
He is survived by one
daughter, Miss Donna Bry
ant, Dallas; mother, Mrs.
Marlon Gardner Bryant,
Lyerly; three sisters, Mrs.
Ruth Carpenter, Summer
ville; Mrs. Dorothy Hanle
and Mrs. Virginia Alexan
der, Lyerly; six brothers,
Edward. Jack, Grady and
Norman Bryant of Summer
ville; Rev. Johnny Bryant
and W C. “Bill” Bryant,
Lyerly; a number of nieces
and nephews.
Funeral services were con
ducted at the chapel of J. D
Hill Funeral Home Tuesday
at 2 p.m. with Rev. J. B
Cantrell and Rev. T. A. Wal
lace officiating. Burial was
in the Lyerly Cemetery.

wards, Harold Bishop, Roy

Beautiful’
Drive Set
Chattooga County will
join the rest of the state
Jan. 24-30 in "Make Georgia
Beautiful Week”.
The planting of dogwood
trees and a general clean
up of the state are slated.
The event is co-sponsored
by the University of Geor
gia Extension Service and
the Tourist Division of the
Georgia Department of In
dustry and Trade.
Reports from the various
counties as to their ac
tivities for the week include
the removing of out-dated
political posters, the tearing
down of unused buildings,
the distribution of litter
bags and barrels, and gen
eral clean-ups in their com
munities. Industries are
participating by planting
shrubs and dogwoods and
cleaning up their property.
Highlighting the week’s ac
tivities will be thousands of
4-H Club members through
out the state policing the
highways picking up trash
and litter on Saturday, Jan
uary 30.
Civic clubs, community
clubs, garden clubs and 4-H
groups will participate in
"Make Georgia Beautiful
Week” in conjunction with
the county agents. “The
county agents have done a
tremendous job organizing
this first ‘Make Georgia
Beautiful Week’, and we are
looking forward to working,
with them and the Exten
sion Service for many years
to come on this annual
event,” said Bill Hardman,
Director, Tourist Division,
Department of Industry and
Trade.

Jesse Emory, president of
the Men’s Brotherhood of
Trion First Baptist Church,
has announced that the
monthly meeting will be
held Saturday.
The session will begin
with the supper meeting in
the church’s fellowship hall.
Following the supper period,
the program period will fea
ture the Rev. James Crane,
pastor of the Waterville
Baptist Church.

Brotherhood, who will be in
charge of the program pe
riod, urges all members of
the organization to be pres
ent. Also, he extends an in

Morgan Heads
Tech Branch
Dave Morgan has been
named director of the North
west Georgia branch of
Georgia Tech’s Industrial
Development Division. The
branch headquarters is
Rome but Chattooga and
other counties in the area
are served.
Mr. Morgan replaces Ted
St. Clair who resigned in
November to take a position
with the state of Virginia.
He was with the Savannah
District Authority as an in
dustrial development spe
cialist before taking the
Rome position.
