Services Today
For C. R. Echols
Charlie Echols, Sr., 82, res
ident of Chattooga County
since he was seven years of
age, died Tuesday at 2:50
p.m. He was born in Floyd
County the son of the late
Walter T. Echols and Nan
nie T. Echols and Nannie
Avery Echols. He was a re
tired farmer.
He is survived by wife,
Mrs. Charlie Echols, Sr.; one
daughter, Mrs. Katherine
Echols Camp, Route No. 2,
Summerville; two sons, John
Echols and Charles Echols
of Summerville; seven
grandchildren and 3 great
grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services will be
conducted from the J. D.
Hill Funeral Home Chapel
at 11 a.m. Thursday (today).
Rev. W. E. Hotchkiss will of
ficiate with burial in the
Perrennial Springs Ceme
tery.

Founder's Day honors
each year the late Miss Mar
tha Berry, who founded the
Berry Schools, the corporate
name of the college and
academy, on January 13,
190?. Miss Berry developed
and directed the schools
until her death in 1942. She
was widely recognized for
her dynamic contributions
to the development of the
Berry campuses and to edu
cation in Georgia and the
South.

ducted from the Summer
ville First Baptist Church,
of which he was a member,
at 2 p.m. Wednesday, with
the Revs. C. E. Reece, Rob
ert Franklin and A. A. Tan
ner officiating. Interment
was in Summerville Ceme
tery.

Dies in Rome
Mrs. Doshie Wilson Mathis,
86, died Thursday, January
6, in a Rome convalescent
home.
Mrs. Mathis was a lifelong
resident of Chattooga Coun
ty and was a member of the
Summerville Methodist
Church.
She is survived by two
daughters, Mrs. Willie B.
Cash, Summerville; Mrs.
Bonnie Underwood, Atlanta;
three sons, Julian Mathis,
Lindale; D. E. Mathis, Chat
tanooga; O. A. Mathis, Tus
caloosa, Ala. Twenty grand
children, a number/ of great
grandchildren and a num
ber of nieces and nephews
also survive.
Funeral services were con
ducted from the chapel of
Henderson and Frazier Fu
neral Home, Rome, with
Rev. Buddy Brown and
Wrathburn Cash officiating.
Active pallbearers were
grandsons. Burial was in
Eastview Cemetery, Rome.

tracted national attention

‘Methodist Story’, the
church’s official publication
for officials and leaders in
local churches.
Dr. Harold McSwain, Gen
eral Board of Missions, vis
ited here recently and said
the project would have
priority on receiving two
volunteer workers for the
summer to work full time on
the project.
It was explained to the
congregation that the check
being received from the
Board of Missions is part of
the Methodist Funds Cru
sade, a $1.5 million—four
year effort on the part of
the Methodists in North
Georgia for church exten
sion, a home for the aged
and a new conference cen
ter in Atlanta.
