Price of Milk
Up Again
By One Cent
A penny per quart in
crease in the price of milk
is scheduled for July 1, the
Georgia Milk Commission
announced today.
The chief causes of the
milk price hike are rising
labor costs on the farm and
in the plant and the in
crease of per capita income
in the state, Clifton A. Ward,
chairman of the commission
said.
The July increase will
bring the price of milk in
the Atlanta area to 31 cents
per quart in the store and to
32 cents for home delivery.
Half gallon prices will in
crease from 59 to 60 cents in
the store and from 61 to 63
cents for home delivery.
Milk prices are estab
lished, Ward explained,
under a milk pricing for
mula which is prepared by
University of Georgia econ
omists. Economic factors
affecting the production
and processing of milk are
the basis of the formula
used by the economists.
When a price change is in
dicated by the formula, the
change is automatic.
In a recent court case chal
lenging the authority of the
Georgia Milk Commission,
the Fulton Superior Court
on May 5, 1967, ruled against
the Commission. However,
as the case has been ap
pealed to the Georgia Su
preme Court the lower
court’s decision has not ef
fected operations of the
commission. The appeal is
expected to be heard in July
or September sessions of the
Supreme Court.
