Former Chattoogan
Gets Acworth Post
A former resident of Sum
merville has been named
recreation director for the
City of Acworth. Jerry Wil
lingham. better known to the
people of this area as “Dink”
Willingham. assumed his
duties in the Georgia city on
April 21.
Mr Willingham was grad
uated from Summerville
(Chattooga* High School in
1959 He was an outstand
ing athlete while attending
school at SHS. having won
letters in three sports. He
was twice se’ected in 1957
and 1958 to the class “A"
All-State squad for his fine
football ability.
The native Chattoogan
was also selected by his
coaches as Best Defensive
Lineman' as a sophomore
and 'Best Lineman’ as a jun
ior Aside from his athletic
ability. Mr. Willingham was
an outstanding student, hav
ing been awarded the highly
coveted STAR student award
for the school year 1958-59.
The recreation director
has been living in Acworth
for some three and one-half
years and has been very ac
tive in civic affairs and
youth development activi
ties He has held various
offices in the Acworth Jay
cees and is at present on
the board of directors of that
organization
Mr Wi lingham was one
of the original founders of
the Acworth Pop Warner
Football Club, which spon
sors and provides financial
assistance to boys between
the ages of 9-14 who wish to
play football In addition to
holding various offices in the

115-pound boys for the last
two years — providing lead
ership for these youths and
guiding the team to a berth
in the Jonquil Bowl, an an
nual event sponsored by the
Smyrna Chamber of Com
merce.
He is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. Arthur Willingham of
Kennesaw and is married to
the former Aleta Hart’ine of
Trion.
An Acworth resident
summed up the regard with
which he is held by people
in his adopted city by say
ing: “Jerry Willingham is an
outstanding young man in
our community and was the
logical choice when we lost
our (recreation) director to
Roswell. Ga.
Cause of Death:
Drinking Water
The dangers of drink
came home the hard
way—and by an unex
pected avenue -to an
unidentified alcohol i c
found dead in a tene
ment patio in Mexico
City.
He died from drinking
water.
A police physician said
that after years of evi
dently drinking only liq
uor, the dead man’s sys
tem had become so un
accustomed to water
that the shock of it
killed him on the spot.
Gospel Meeting at
Church of Christ
The South Commerce
Street Church of Christ will
held a gospel meeting June
18-25, it was announced this
week by Minister Dale H.
McCaleb.
G. K. Wallace, vice presi
dent of Freed-Hardeman
College, Henderson, Tenn.,
will deliver the messages
each evening at 7:30. A
morning service at 10 o’clock
will also be held for persons
who cannot attend at night.
Mr Wallace as been active
as a minister of the Church
of Christ for over 40 years.
For 25 years he has been
associated directly or in
directly with Freed-Harde
man College. He has served
as a special lecturer to
preachers and church lead
ers on various Bible topics
for 20 years. He was execu
tive assistant to the presi
dent of Freed-Hardeman for
a number of years and for
the past three years has
served as vice president and
director of developments of
the college.
Mr. McCaleb said that the
South Commerce Street
church has been redecorated
throughout, with new car
peting installed in the audi
torium.
The guest speaker is ex
ecutive secretary of the Na
tional Booster Club and a
member of the Freed-Harde
man Estate Planning and
Lectureship committees. He
is also a member of the Ten
nessee Education Assocla-

of 16 booklets and author of
eight books. One of the
books he has written is used
as a textbook in college and
by classes and church lead
ers over the nation. In addi
tion to his work with the
college, he conducts from 10
to 12 gospel meetings each
year.
