War On
‘Clip Joints’
i GPS > Gov. Lester G. Mad
dox’s war on alleged “clip
joints” in Southeast Geor
gia, which is being directed
by Col. R. H. Burson, direc
tor of the Georgia Depart
ment of Public Safety, came
in for considerable praise in
a recent Savannah Morning
News editorial.
“State Safety Director
R. H. Burson,” the editorial
said, “has the right idea in
pledging to continue the
campaign against ‘clip joints’
in the Costal Empire until
he’s satisfied the activity
has ceased.”
Col. Burson recently an
nounced that additional
state troopers would be
moved into the area with
orders from Gov. Maddox to
put a stop to tourist cap
ping. He said the troopers
will concentrate along U. S.
17 and initially will limit
their activities to patrolling
the highways, with occasion
al stops at business estab
lishments along the tourist
route.
Commenting on this latest
move, the News editorial
said: “Burson said some of
the known chp joints already
had closed down after Gov.
Maddox began the fight
earier this year with a trip
to this section of the state.
At that time Gov. Maddox
pledged to do anything nec
essary to stop the fleecing of
tourists.

The excess baggage car
ried by a Dublin passenger
was under his belt. The
man’s girth was so wide, of
ficials said, that he couldn’t
get the seat belt to buckle.
The plane, carrying 63
passengers on a flight to
London, taxied back to the'
hanger where another seat
with a longer belt was
quickly fitted into the craft.
