British ‘Keep Their G)oF
The British have produced two new examples to
support the widely held belief that nothing perturbs
them, ot even a man dressed as a lion on a subway.
A 20-year-old London insurance broker traveled
home from the office that way to win a sl4 bet. He
sat there — lion’s head and all — reading his news
paper and minding his own business, and none of
his fellow travelers had a word to say.
A 31-year-old bricklayer won a $72 bet for an
hour-long ride on the train from Sevenoaks to Lon
don wearing a fur hat, sunglasses, bow tie, swimming
trunks, boots and socks and a wrist watch. He also
carried a tightly furled umbrella.
The only reaction to his unusual attire came
from one businessman in his first-class coach who
remarked.
“Chilly, isn’t it?”
New Hospital to Relieve
Central State Congestion

State Hospital at Milledge
ville, State health director
Dr. John H. Venable has an
nounced that the Bainbridge
unit of Southwestern State
Hospital is now operable and
ready to accept transfer pa
tients efrom the larger hos
pital.
The Bainbridge facility —
a former U.S. air base —
has undergone extensive
renovation since it became
the property of the State
Health Department in 1966.
It is being operated under
the administrative guidance
of Dr Manson B. Pettit, who
as superintendent of South-

western State Hospital is re
sponsible for both the new
Bainbridge unit and the
hospital's Thomasville wing
which opened in August of
last year.
The tWo units, 48 miles
apart, serve mental patients
from 52 southwest Georgia
counties and share admini
strative services.
According to Dr. Venable,
rthe Bainbridge branch of
the hospital will initially
accomodate 102 patients who
began moving in this week
as transfers from Thomas
ville. Eventual capacity will
be 388, he said.
The health director em
phasized that neither Thom
asville nor Bainbridge is ac
cepting direct admissions.
