VERDANT VEGETATION
No, this isn’t Jack and the beanstalk, it’s only
James Rice, Economy St., Summerville, picking his
beans. The plants have grown to a height of 10
feet and Mr. Rice finds it necessary to use a six-foot
stepladder to reach the topmost vegetables. He also
has giant tomato plants, corn, okra, squash, let
tuce, green onions and peanuts. The gardener says
his guess as to the reason for the lush growth is the
fact that he feeds the plants every three weeks and
keeps them well-watered.

CONTROL EXTERNAL
PESTS OF LIVESTOCK
One sure method of allow

Power sprayers, automatic
treadle sprayers, knapsack
sprayers, compressed ai r
sprayers, and rubbing de
vices are satisfactory for ap
plying liquid Insecticides to
cattle.
Wettable powaers should
not be used in equipment
with gear-type or nylon rol
ler pumps.
Dusts may also be used for
control of some insects on
cattle, and they be applied
by hand.
So there is really no ex
cuse for you to lose money
with you beef or dairy cattle
just because of external
pests. Get busy and make
those cattle free of pests.
The cattle will certainly ap
preciate it.

SERICEA FOR QUAIL
Serlcea makes a good cov
er for quail on your place. It
is now time to get the seri
cea into the group in order
to provide a good cover for
the birds.
You'll need to broadcast
at the rate of 30 pounds
scarified seed per acre.
Serlcea should be planted in
15 to 20 foot strips that are
300 to 400 feet long.
Serlcea will grow best in
clay loam, slit loam, and
sand loam, but will not do
well in deep, sandy soils.
You may plant serlcea for
cover for quail through early
July, so you don’t have too
much time left to aid the
quail population on your
place giving them cover
with serlcea.

NEMATODE CONTROL
FOR SHRUBS
If you need to control
nematodes around your
shrubs, there is certainly a
treatment that will do the
job
When nematodes become a
problem around established
plantings there are three
nematocides that you may
apply. These three are Nem
[ agon. Fumazone. or V-C 13
, To apply one of the nema
tocides. you first need to re
move the mulch from the
r area around the shrub This
> mulch should be removed
• back beyond the outer can
j opy of the plant to be
! treated Next, you need to
losen the soil surface in or
der to prevent rapid runoff
of water.
. After loosening the soil,
you will then need to punch
holes under the canopy of
the plant using a rod one
half to one-inch in diameter
Holes should be punched six
to eight Inches deep on a
ten to 12 inch spacing.
Then you are ready to add
the nematocide and water.
After the application, you
J will need to apply additional
, water to flood the area un
, der the plant.
Now you are readv to rake
the mulch back in place
This should give good con
trol of nematodes around
your plants

Better Check
Illinois officials have
warned check cashers to be
a bit more careful. They
said counterfeit state checks
ate being foisted off on the
unwary.
The bogus checks, he said,
are not key punched as all
state checks are, and the
name of the state treasurer
is misspelled.
