Music Club Hears
Frank Miller, Jr.
The spacious home of Dr.
and Mrs. W. U. Hyden, was
invitingly warm with the
spirit of Christmas for the
December meeting of the
Summerville Music Study
Club.
Artistic arrangements, in
keeping with the Christmas
season, were spangled from
the entrance which always
depicts the seasons of the
year, throughout the house.
Mrs. Edward Surles, pres
ident, presided.
Guests for the occasion
were: Mesdames Penn Lew
is, Dudley Magruder, Marlin
Payne. Clarence Randolph.
Gary Smith, and John D.
Taylor.
Mrs. Surles presented
Frank Miller, Jr., a senior
at Shorter College, who was
in charge of the program,
“The Impressionists — the
Expressionists.” Interesting
presentations were made
under seven topics. 1. “Im
pressionism” —a style of
composing designed to
create descriptive impres
sions by evoking moods, fin
ished 1880-1910;
2. “Expressionism”—Music
stripped of feeling, emotion,
and human relationships;
3. “Primivitism” — Disap
pointed tonalitus, spacious
melodies, rapidly changing
meters. He quoted a de
lightful poem from the 1924
Boston Herald: “Who wrote
this fiendish Rite of Spring?
What right had he to write
this thing? Against our
helpless ears to fling, its
crash, clash, cling, clang,
bing. bang, bing.”
4. “Traditional” —Neo-Ro-
mantic style of most motion
picture music;
5. “Neo-Classists — Com
posing is classical forms;
6. “Electronic Music’’-Pro
duced by electrophonic in
struments through electro
magnetic reverberations
converted into sound waves
by various electronic de
vices;
7. “Electrics”—The use of
all styles.
Marc Newton, pianist and
composer played one of his
own compositions, “T h e
Seven Wonders of the
World,” those being “The
Mausoleum at Halicarnas
sens, Prelude No. 1;” “The
Pyramids of Egypt, Prelude
No. 2;” “The Hanging Gar
dens of Babylon, Prelude No.
3;” “The Pharois Light
house, Prelude No. 4;” “The
Colossus of Rhodes, Prelude
No. 5;” “Mysterioso, The
Statue of Zeus, Prelude No.
6;” and “The Temple Diana.
Prelude No. 7.”
Other students from Shor
ter assisting with various in
struments and duets were:
Steve Parker, Richard Shad
inger, Ray Scantlin, Marie
Newton, Marie Wallace, Billy
Bailey and Marcia Jones,
each of whom mark out
standing contributions of
talents.
The hostesses were Miss
Annie Pitts. Mrs. Hyden and
Mrs. Harold Florence.

Verses for Meditation:
And it came to pass in those days, that there went out
a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should
be taxed. And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius
was governor of Syria. And all went to be taxed, every one
into his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee,
out of the city of Nazareth into Judaea, unto the city of
David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the
house and lineage of David. ) To be taxed with Mary his
espoused wife, being great with child. And so it was, that,
while they were there, the days ivere accomplished that she
should be delivered. And she brought forth her first-born
son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him
in a manger; because there was no room for them in the
inn. And there were in the same country shepherds abiding
in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And,
10, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of
the Lord shone round about them and they were sore
afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for be
hold, I bring you great tidings of joy, which shall be to all
people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David
a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. —Luke 2:1-11.
