Burson Calls
For More
Patrolmen
(GPS)—With thousands
more cars traveling billions
more miles in Georgia than
ever before, the State Patrol
presently needs a 1,000-man
force to adequately police
the vast network of high
ways, in the opinion of Col.
R. H. Burson, director of the
Georgia Department of Pub
lic Safety.
Speaking on various phases
of enforcement at the first
annual Governor’s Confer
ence on Traffic Safety in At
lanta, the safety director
said “our present force of
550 troopers is not enough to
meet our obligation to pre
vent accidents and protect
the lives of Georgia motor
ists.” He went on:
“The Maddox administra
tion has provided additional
manpower that will bring
our total strength to 600
troopers by early next year.
But we need 1,000 patrol
men on the highways to
bring about any significant
reduction in the death add
accident rates.
Reduce Toll
“I’m confident that we can
make a sizable dent in the
accident toll if we are given
the adequate personnel and
equipment to do it."
Turning to what he called
“the highway construction
boon," Col. Burson said:
“The Interstate System al
ready poses a problem and
when it is completed this
problem will only be com
pounded. State troopers are
responsible for about 90.000
miles of highways in Geor
gia, and almost 600 miles of
this is in the Interstate Sys
tem where traffic is heavier
and faster.
"The time is already upon
us when we are going to
have to establish a separate
Interstate patrol force,” he
declared, pointing out that
Florida and South Carolina
already have done this, as
signing 90 and 50 troopers,
respectively, to that duty.
Another 75 men patrol Flor
ida’s Sunshine Parkway.
Main dishes featuring
cheese can usually be money
savers, according to Miss
Nellie C. Boyd, home econ
omist-nutrition. with the
University of Georgia Co
operative Extension Service.
The protein in cheese is the
same high quality as that in
meat, fish and eggs
