BY STEPHEN J. FAZEKAS
We have just passed through
a time of election in this
nation. A time of choosing a
leader, the representative of
this country, and a man who
will stand up for what we hold
closest to our hearts. All of the
campaigning and resolving have
cut a swath of promises across
our minds, setting a spark of
new hope and rehabilitation
for a crumbling nation. Can we
ever have peace?
Today, peace is a white
dove fluttering around the
United Nations buildings, with
her tail-feathers gunned off and
the olive twig shot out of her
mouth. The golden words of
freedom drop from the mouths
of the world’s leading nations,
while nuclear stock-piles loom
skyward. The country is full of
assassinations, demonstrations
and uprisings on every hand.
Crime, dope and immorality
are running wild all across the
face of this country. Social re
formers scream rehabilitation.
Instead of getting any better,
it’s getting worse. Peace will
float farther and farther out of
our reach until the Prince of
Peace Himself comes back to
take control.
“And suddenly there was
with the angel, a multitude of
the heavenly host praising Cod
and saying. Glory to God in
the highest, and on earth
peace, good will toward men.’’
(Luke 2:13-14)
Almost two thousand years
ago the heavenly host promised
peace and good will to all men.
All we have to do is look at the
history books to find out that
something was wrong with
their prophecy. Instead of
good will, there has been
bloodshed, commotion and
turmoil. What happened? No,
the angels were correct in
promising, “peace on earth.”
This was a conditional promise.
If the people accepted the
promised Messiah, then there
would have been a glorious age
of peace and freedom. God
knew that His son would be
rejected. All of this was accord
ing to a plan designed from
eternity.
Peace will never come from
the United Nations, or Paris, or
even NATO or Mr Nixon is
just as incapable as Mr Wallace
or Mr. Humphrey in bringing
about the change in this
nation, let alone the world.
Peace must start in the
hearts of men.
“But the wicked are like the
troubled sea, when it cannot
rest, whose waters cast up mire
and dirt.
There is no peace, saith my
God, to the wicked.” (Isaiah
57:20-21)
The peace of God must
reign in our hearts and in the
hearts of the Russians, before
we shake hands over Vietnam.
Let’s get closer to home. The
peace of God must be in my
heart before 1 can shake hands
with and completely forgive
my neighbor, for something I
hold in my heart against him.
I he Bible tells of One who
rode out on the sea of Galilee.
A tremendous storm came up
and the disciples in the boat
were afraid. This One uttered
the words, “Peace, be still,”
and the storm died instantly.
Is your heart in turmoil, like
that troubled sea? Why not let
Jesus say “Peace, be still,” in
your heart, and know what real
freedom and happiness can be.
“Come unto me all ye that
labor and are heavy laden and I
will give you rest." (Matthew
I 1: 2H)
