Draft Ends
1970 With
Number 195
Selective Service System
Director Dr. Curtis W. Tarr an
nounced last week that no
registrant with a sequence
number over 195 will be
ordered for induction in Sep
tember, and that it appears 195
will be the ceiling for the re
mainder of the calendar year
1970. Tarr previously had an
nounced a 195 ceiling for
August.
At the same time, the De
fense Department announced
that draft calls for the re
mainder of 1970 will total
39,000, which breaks down as
follows: September, 12,000;
October, 12,000. November,
8,000; and December, 7.000.
That brings the 1970 total
draft calls to 163,500, the
lowest number since prior to
the escalation of the Vietnam
conflict.
In discussing the draft ceil
ing for 1970, Dr. Tarr ex
plained that “an influx of new
manpower mostly formerly
deferred students has really
helped the situation to the
point where we think that it
will be unnecessary to raise the
ceiling on sequence numbers
during the remainder of 1970.”
Tarr explained that: “Our
manpower flows are confirm
ing what we expected in June,
when we said we were peaking
off in sequence number
limits." Tarr added, “1 think
that the results this year stand
in justification of the draft
lottery system initiated by
President Nixon.”
