JUST KIDDING’
“Mary Jo, eat this Indian
chief.”
Well, I wasn’t particularly in
the cannibalistic mood at that
time.’ I was not in the back
woods of the Phillipine Islands
or in the far reaches of the
Amazon . . . But sitting in the
car with Shannon, Kathy and
Melissa Martin waiting for their
mother. And the Indian chief,
the gun, the horse, the wagon,
etc., were little pieces of candy
that Shannon wanted to share
with me.
“Would you like to have an
ice cream then?” she asked.
1 went shopping with them.
We stopped at a store, and I
bought 10 pounds of cat food.
Prior to stopping, Barbara told
me that Shannon used to eat
the dry cat food when he was
little. Cautiously, and 1
thought very smoothly, I sug
gested she give me the key and
let me put the cat food in the
trunk.
They joined lots of other
excited children looking at the
animals under the tent at East
gate. Shannon spotted the lit
ter of rabbits. There was a
nanny goat in the pen with
them. “Is that their Mama?” he
asked.
While eating lunch, I saw a
face go by that I thought I
remembered. Recognition was
almost instant. So when we
finished lunch 1 went over and
spoke to Itoi McElory, whom I
hadn’t seen since 1 was a little
girl. She is still beautiful and
lives near Dalton. She was the
wife of Jack McElroy who used
to hold revivals here nearly
every year. He was killed sev
eral years back in an automo
bile wreck.

ANOTHER DAY
Another day recently 1 went
shopping with Mary Erwin and
Joy and Sandra McSherry.
They were lots of fun and
while their Mommy ran in a
store to buy Joy’s birthday
present, they sang Christmas
songs to me, rushing the season
somewhat.
Sandra got a “skeeter” bite.
Not having any medication, I
gave her my perfume stick
Both she and Joy really per
fumed themselves good with it.
When I got home, 1 shelled
and froze nearly a bushel of
lima beans.

SCHOOL OFF
TO GOOD START
I was at Trion Elementary
School the first day around 10
o’clock, and everything was
going along clickety clack like
school had been in progress for
months. This is a beautiful well
run school. I stopped to drink
out of one of the old water
fountains that might very well
have been the one I drank out
of many years back on my first
day of school.
Later, in the day I had oc
casion to go to the Summer
ville Elementary School, which
had not then opened.
Just for fun, I sat down in
one of the swings with some of
the children. I had fun swing
ing a little, but I believe the
swings have shrunk since “my
day.”
