these young people to depend
upon this program, these
dollars and their government.
“We should, in fact, take
special pains to teach them just
the opposite that in these
United States, this great land
of opportunity, regardless of
which side of the tracks he
comes from and whatever his
race, any person who dares use
his own initiative can meet
with success.
“This program should pro
vide our young people with a
boost, but not a crutch. And
neither should these young
people be fed the warmed-over
lie that poverty and unemploy
ment give them justification
for committing lawless acts.”
Gov. Maddox said that there
is no excuse for any person in
America to participate in riots
and to engage in looting, burn
ing and killing.
“Our young people,” he
declared, “are searching for the
answer to the question: ‘What’s
America all about?’ And
they’re getting a lot of wrong
answers.” He added:
“I think that through this
youth opportunity program,
we should show all of our
young people that America is a
nation which was built by men
and women with courage, with
initiative, with ideas and with
determination to win.
“And they should be taught
