Gov. Ernest Vandiver has made
it official-he’s running for the
U. S. Senate.
“I will take my campaign
directly to the people because 1
know that is the way they

He made the formal an
nouncement in the chambers
of the State Senate, over which
he presided after winning his
first statewide race in 1954 to
become lieutenant governor.
He went on in 1958 to win a
four-year term as governor.
He made his announcement
before a gathering of sup
porters from all over the state.
They journeyed to Atlanta to

Mr. Ragon and I took a trip
last Tuesday to visit an elder of
the Summerville Presbyterian
Church, a friend of the whole
congregation, and no doubt a
friend to many in Chattooga
County; we only went to see
one man, but he is all of the
above.
As you might know already,
Olney Meadows and his wife
went to South Carolina during
Christmas to visit their
daughter and her family. How-
the state in a camper. The
journey, to renew old acquain
tances and to make new ones,
will begin about March 1.
Vandiver already has been
travelling about the state mak
ing speeches since he resigned
November 1 as Georgia
Adjutant General to prepare
for the vigorous campaign he
intends to wage.
“I believe, as did Senator
Russell, that there is no higher
calling in life than public ser
vice,” the 53-year old Lavonia
lawyer said. “I have spent most
of my life serving the people of
this great state and 1 am asking
them for a chance to do so
again.”
“I plan to discuss issues
personally with as many Geor
gians as possible. This is what
they want and this is what I
like to do. This is why the
voters and 1 have always gotten
along so well together.”
Vandiver has written per
sonal letters to most elected
public officials in the state in
forming them of his candidacy
and soliciting their support.
“Through my background
as governor, lieutenant gover
nor, and adjutant general, I be
lieve that I have the experience
to serve our state well as sena
tor,” he said in a typical letter.
“If elected, 1 can and will work
closely with our senior senator
to give Georgia the strongest
possible representation in the
United States Senate."
He has proposed making the
killing of a police officer a
federal crime, which would
bring the FBI into the case. He
also has advocated the maxi
mum federal aid possible to
train police and to supplement
their salaries.

ever, while there Mr. Meadows
became sick and had to be
hospitalized. They have him
down, but he is not out! He is
down in the sense that they
have him restricted to com
plete bed rest. He isn’t out
because his mind, wit, and
Christian witness is still very
much active.
Mr. Meadows is one of those
people that when you go to
make him comfortable and to
cheer him up, he tends to do as
much of these things for you as
you do for him, perhaps more!
Both Mr. and Mrs. Meadows
sent their love and thanks for
all the prayers, letters, and
cards. And they both said that
they wanted to and would be
coming home.

Davis Panel OK’s Funds
The National Science Foun
dation has awarded $193,875
to six Georgia universities and
colleges for graduate r-a’nee
ship programs, according to
Congressman John Davis,
whose sub-committee oversees
the foundation.
The selected schools are At
lanta University, Emory Univ
ersity, Georgia Tech, Georgia
State University, the Medical
College of Georgia, and the
University of Georgia.
The funds will provide stip
ends for 33 graduate students
who are studying for advanced
degrees in science, engineering,
and mathmetics during the
1972-73 academic year. Addi
tionally, a percentage of the
funds will go to the participa
ting institutions for cost of
education allowances in place
of tuition and fees.
The traineeship program
covers all fields in the natural
and social sciences and includes
such interdisciplinary fields as
ecology, oceanography, geo
chemistry and meteorology. A
total of 224 institutions
throughout the country will
participate in the program, and
federal funds in the amount of
$10,600,000 will go to support
1,808 graduate students at
these schools.
