DAHLONEGA Georgia
Veterans Service Director Pete
Wheeler cited the 500-thou
sand dollar appropriation for
the Georgia War Veterans
Home in Milledgeville as
“ . . the most important piece
of veterans' legislation passed
by the recent session of the
Georgia General Assembly.”
Speaking to the Ninth
District Convention of The
American Legion and Auxiliary
meeting in Dahlonega, Ga.
Sunday morning, Wheeler said,
“The half-million dollars, ap
propriated by the Georgia law
makers, means the beginning of
a long-awaited and much
needed four-year plan of
modernization and improve
ment for two vitally-important
buildings within the Georgia
War Veterans Home complex
in Milledgeville.”
Commenting on other legis
lation passed on behalf of
veterans, Wheeler said he is
happy with the legislators’
approval of the change in the
date for the observance of
Veterans' Day from the fourth
Monday in October back to
“the traditional and appro
priate" date of November I 1.
The General Assembly also
approved a measure which
exempts the sales tax on a
vehicle for which a service
connected disabled veteran is
given a VA grant to purchase
and specially adapt because of
his particular disability These
vehicles bear the familiar red,
white and blue “HV” (Handi
capped Veteran) license tags
These HV license tagholders
may also benefit further be
cause a measure also was
approved that will exempt such
veterans from the payment of
ad valorem taxes on their
specially-adapted cars "This
bill must be voted on by the
people in the November elec
tion, though.” said Wheeler,
"because it will require a con
stitutional amendment before
it can become effective "
The Georgia lawmakers also
voted to include Viet Nam
veterans under a law which
provides for the exemption of
Business License fees for the
disabled and blind

Personal Freedom of
OPPORTUNITY
A prominent citizen of a southwestern metropolitan city \
recently contributed $1 million to a new 300-bed hospital. When \
asked how he felt to have been so successful in life, he summed 1
up the reason very well in these six points: . \t
1. Having been born in a country that has provided its ‘
citizens with absolute personal freedom of opportunity to engage
in any business or profession and have full protection of the law
in any gains resulting therefrom.
2. Having parents who had the old fashion concept that
opportunities in life are created by hard work and right living.
3. The necessity to start work at an early age created a i
desire to achieve and make work both a pleasure and a recreation. »-lx /
4. A patient and understanding wife who has provided me
with a happy home environment and who has been the chief BK
architect in the rearing of our children.
5. An abundance of friends, people of good will and influ
ence, who have helped me every time I needed a job, recommen
dation, or a loan.
6. And MOST important of all, the recognition early in / * J * 3Jr
life that only God could give man the confidence to achieve and \ «11
the courage to overcome the problems and difficulties that beset I Kf 1
all of us. \o ' j i
