Mrs. Martha Calhoun’s fourth-grade class at Summerville
Elementary School ended its study of world fishing areas
with a seafood luncheon in their classroom. Many students
had never tasted shrimp and other seafood studied in the
unit. With the aid of many of their mothers, they were able
to have an unusual and enjoyable luncheon.
The class brought sea shells, model boats, canned sea
food , made booklets about different types of boats, and did
other research. Some of their drawings and reports are
shown on the bulletin board.
They compared lobster fishing in Maine to cod fishing in
Norway. They learned about climate, ocean currents, agri
culture, economy, and studied the histories of these two
places, as well as present methods of fishing.
The children thought this an excellent way to finish up a
unit in Social Studies. The support of their parents was
greatly appreciated.
The accompanying pictures attest to the fact that the
pupils thoroughly enjoyed this unusual experience.
