HUMILITY
An American college stu
dent, while traveling in
Germany, visited the home of
Beethoven at Bonn. She stood
for a moment quietly looking
upon Beethoven’s piano. Then
she asked the guide whether
she might play on it. With re
luctance the guide granted
permission After playing a few
bars from the “Moonlight
Sonata,” she said to the guide,
“I suppose all of the great
pianists have played on this
instrument when they visited
here.” “No,” the guide replied.
“Two years ago Paderewski
was here, but he said he was
unworthy to touch it.”
Webster’s Dictionary defines
“humility” as: (1 “State of
quality of being humble in
spirit, freedom from pride and
arrogance.” f 2) “An act of sub
mission or humble courtesy.”
The greatest revelation that
I have received through my
education is the recognition
that the universe is far bigger
than my meager mind, and that
no matter how much I know
my knowledge is not enough to
make me proud.
The world’s vastness, com
plexity, richness of meaning,
and its mystery defy our at-

tempts to completely en
compass it or penetrate it with
thought and understanding.
Therefore, humility is the
recognition that the
knowledge, good and other
characteristics within us is not
self made; it comes from above
and beyond us from God.
My reasons for the above
thoughts concerning humility
is that perhaps it might be a
good means of preparing our
selves for the approaching
Easter-or better-the whole of
Holy Week
In Matthew 16:24 Christ
says, “If any man will come
after me, let him deny himself,
and take up his cross, and fol
low me.” This is something
that we must do. But watch
out, there is a danger within
this! Sometimes we become
proud of our crosses and we
lose our humility toward
Christ. Or in other words we
seek to share an equal place
with Him.
Tradition concerning the
death of the disciple Peter
holds a wonderful illustration
of someone carrying his cross.
Peter was put to death upon a
cross for his belief Hqwe^u^
he did not think of himself 1 as
being equal with Christ and
thus requested that he be
placed up on his cross, upside
down.
