DO WE NEED
(Continued From Page 1)
Mr. Farrar stated that some
of the lawyers didn't care
whether the court was
abolished or not. Then why is
he and a few other lawyers
putting up such a fight to try
to keep the court? He men
tioned that the judge and
solicitor were serving just as a
public servant, but you remem
ber last year they demanded
that I double their salaries, and
I refused to do so, because I
was not elected to let four or
five lawyers tell me what to do.
I was told when I refused to
double the salary of the solici
tor and judge that 1 would have
opposition this year, which is
their prerogative. But when the
day comes that I let four or
five lawyers tell me what to do,
then that's the day I have no
right to run for any public
office. This court does not be
long to four or five lawyers, it
belongs to you, the people of
Chattooga County. I think one
thing that’s wrong is they think
it does belong to them.
Now, Mr. Farrar didn’t
bother to tell you that the
August Grand Jury of 1971
made a recommendation to in
troduce legislation with a refer
endum on it when the Legisla
ture convened in January,
1972, to give you, the people,
an opportunity to say whether
or not you wanted to keep the
court. Now he stated that I was
trying to abolish it through
ignorance. I wonder if he is
also saying that the members
of this Grand Jury were igno
rant in their recommendation.
I don’t think they were igno
rant. I think these men used
wisdom and good judgement
and listed below are the men
who served on this Grand Jury:
Foreman of the Grand Jury,
Hubert W Johnson; Clerk of
the Grand Jury, James Abney;
Warren Harvey McCollum, Earl
Clint Barfield, Harold M.
Dempsey, Robert II Strawn,
Henry J Bankey, J D Bishop,
Leroy linker, Eldred Willing
ham, Max White, Jerry T For
tenberry, Charles Floyd,
Howell Dalton, Clay Hum
phrey, Max Kellett Cox,
t haries W Ratliff, Malcolm E.
Gaylor. Hamp Moseley, and
Paul Pullen Jr
I would imagine each of
these men considers Mr. Far
rar’s statement an insult
Another thing Mr. Farrar
didn't talk to you about is the
number of cases which have
never come to trial, the num-
Ihu of cases which have been
nolle prossed, the number of
suspended sentences with no
tines, and the number of pro
bations which were given with
no lines I hese are all a cost to
you. the taxpayers of the
county, and it’s my under
standing they average S4B per
case According to the records

in the County Commissioner’s
office, these will run into sev
eral hundred cases.
In conclusion, let me
emphasize again that the Grand
Jury recommended to pass this
legislation so you might make
the final decision as to whether
or not we should keep the
court or do away with it. I
want to be just as fair with you
as I know how, so don’t believe
anything I have to say about
the court and certainly don’t
believe anything the solicitor
has to say, or the judge. There
is only one official record of
the activities of this court, and
those are the records, which
are in the County Commis
sioner’s office. Go to the com
missioner’s office, see for your
self, see how wasteful this
court can be. Then the decision
is yours, and whatever that
decision might be when the
votes are counted, I will be
more than delighted to abide
by your wishes.
J have not lost faith in the
people of this county. I believe
you have the intelligence to
come to your own conclusion.
Again, let me say, if we only
had one Superior Court judge
then I could see where we
would need this particular
court.

. . . Jeffrey Reed
Young Chattoogan Gets
Mail From White House
Several weeks before school [
vacation began, the pupils in ,
Mrs Lucinda Chamblee’s third

someone in another town or
state.
Jeffrey Reed, a student in I
the class, decided to write to
the White House in Washing- |
ton. He wrote a letter to the

also told him he would appre
ciate any information to share
with his classmates.
Jeffrey didn’t get an answer
before school vacation began,
but he was excited recently
when the mailman gave him a
large envelope with The White
House stamped on front. He
received a booklet from Presi
dent Nixon and a note from
Roland L. Elliott, special assist
ant to the President, which
said:
“On behalf of the President,
1 want to thank you for your
recent letter. He is always
pleased to hear from his young
friends and wanted you to have
the enclosed booklet which he
thought you might enjoy. It
comes to you with the Presi
dent’s best wishes.”
The booklet Jeffrey re
ceived contains pictures of the
President and his family, a let
ter from the President to
young people of America,
questions and answers concern
ing the President and his
family, and information about
the presidency and The White
House.
Chattoogan Injured
An Atlanta man is being
held in Chattooga County jail
after an elderly Cloudland man
reported he was terrorized on
the mountain road Monday
afternoon by an auto driver
who he thought was trying to
kill him.
E. G. Archer is reported in
“critical condition” at Floyd
Hospital, Rome, as a result of
the incident.
Mr. Archer told authorities
that he was driving his car on
the mountain road when a car
began to follow him. He said
that the driver bumped the rear
of his car several times.
The Cloudland resident was
quoted as saying he stopped at
an intersection and got out of
his car to ask the driver what
he was trying to do. Mr. Archer
said that before he could get
back in his car, the driver

ticians, support politicians,
create politicians, and help the
best ones we can find to get
elected. I am thoroughly con
vinced, however, that we
cannot count on politicians,
political leadership, or even
political action except as a part
of something much deeper and
broader to save us.”
Pointing to McDonald’s un
successful race for the Ann
Arbor, Mich., City Council in
1965, Davis said, “He tried to
run as a democrat, but party
officials rejected him because
the Birch Society repudiates
the very democratic process
that he wanted to use to get
into government.”
