K j Straight from the

mouth
By David E»py, Jr.
The following article appeared in one of the Denver,
Colorado dailies last week written by Chet Nelson,
sports columnist.
The subject of the article is Summerville’s own Joe
Patterson to my knowledge the county’s only pro
fessional baseball player at present.
Joe was born right here in Summerville and also
grew up here. His parents are deceased, but he has
several brothers now residing in the city and county.
He’s Bears Glueman
HI HAS IHI LOOKS of a PhD professor of the tine arts. He

law in his adopted home town of Omaha. He had hung up his
spikes, or so he believed, until repeated telephone calls from
Burris proved irresistable
So at 35 years of age, Joe changed his mind and told Burris,
“Send me a contract and I’ll see you in Plant City (Florida, Bears
spring camp)." .
The Bears were off to a floundering start in the American
Association race and have hardly been the gems of consistency
since opening day, but through no fault of Joe Patterson.
The little switch hitter wiped out much of the gloom
descending over the team’s prospects of another winning season
with his bat The Patterson flail produced winning runs to snap
losing streaks three times The last time I looked he was

Patterson Has Deep Knowledge of Game
Patterson's valet to the ball club goes beyond the playing
field His knowledge of the game runs deep and he has a knack of
dispensing it among the younger players.
In fact, everyone likes Joe Patterson’s dedicated approach to
the game, young and old players alike. He’s a philosopher, father,
confessor, sometimes self appointed coach and always an easy
man to talk to.
I asked Joe how the legs feel after the first two months of the
season?
“Just fine, just fine,” he smiled
Doesn’t he like to sit out active participation from time to
time and rest?
“I never give it a thought,” he declared. “I just look at the
lineup card every night and am ready to do what the manager
wants If he says, play, I play If he says ride the bench, I ride the
bench.”
Actually. Patterson doesn't like to sit still and while away an
idle night When he isn’t playing, you’ll find him on the coaching
lines and if needed he'll warm up pitchers in the bullpen He may
not be in the lineup but he'll be very much in every game.
I hat is the wav it has been since he broke in with Keokuk in
the Midwest league in 1959 after signing with the St Louis
Cardinals’ organization After Keokuk there were stops in
Winnipeg in the Northern League and Lancaster in the Fastern
league 1 hen he found a more permanent home at Tulsa when
the Oilers were in the Texas League
In 1965 he stole 67 bases to lead the Texas circuit for the
third straight season Joe was quick on his feet but they say many
ot the thefts came from a study of pitchers’ mannerisms and
sharp thinking

Something More Than l eelin'for Bears
Joe went to little Kock in 1968 but was back in 1 ulsa the
next yeai when the Ollers entered the Pacific Coast League Next
stop was Indianapolis in 1969 when he hit 289 and drove in I
runs then during spring training ot 1970 the Bears bought him
Idea behind the purchase was that Patterson could till in
when young players served military committments and be general
handyman But Joe wound up in 124 games, batted 306 and was
a key in the Grizzlies’ late drive that won the divisional title
last yeat. he appeared in 111 games, stroked a nice 321
batting average Patterson is one ot the best two strike hitters in
the league Vgamst Rochester in the Junior World Series. Joe hit
sateh seven straight times after a two strike count
Since Patterson communicates so well with teammates. I
asked him il he ever gave any thought to managing sometime in
the future
No, not really any serious thought," he said "I have
thought that maybe I would like to coach or scout but then I
have a degree in corporate law and that should be my field
Patterson attended Fort Valley tGa I State College, Uni
versity of Nebraska, Creighton University Law School and re
ceivcd his degree from Bellevue I aw School in Nebraska
"In my eight years with the Bears, Art Fowler is the only
player I feel might have contributed more to this ball club than
Joe Patterson, Burns said "And in appreciation, we’re going to
have a big "Joe Patterson night" on July 23. the day before his
36th birthday "

PROPHECY AND
THE SPIRIT
Last week we discussed The
Spirit and Israel’s leaders. This
week we shall explore the
Prophecy and the Spirit.
The Spirit manifested itself
in prophetic inspiration. When
some of the Spirit that was on
Moses was transferred to the
70 elders, they prophesied, as
did Eldad and Medad (Num
bers 1 1:25-29: “Then the Lord
descended in the cloud and
spoke to him. He took back
part of that same spirit which
he had conferred on Moses and
conferred it on the seventy
elders; as the spirit alighted on
them, they fell into a prophetic
ecstasy, for the first and only
time. Now two men named
Eldad and Medad, who had
been enrolled with the seventy,
were left behind in the camp.
But, though they had not gone
out to the tent, the spirit
alightned on them none the
less, and they fell into an
ecstasy there in the camp. A
young man ran and told Moses
that Eldad and Medad were in
an ecstasy in the camp, where
upon Joshua, son of Nun, who
had served with Moses since he
was a boy, broke in, ‘My lord
Moses, stop them!’ And Moses
rejoined the camp with the
elders of Israel.”).
Balaam likewise gave his
oracles under the influence of
the Spirit (Numbers 24:2:
“But now that Balaam knew
that the Lord wished him to
bless Israel, he did not go and
resort to divination as before.
He turned towards the desert;
and as he looked, he saw Israel
encamped tribe by tribe. The
spirit of God came upon him,
and he uttered his
oracle” . . . ).
When Saul met a band of
prophets who were prophe
sying to the sound of music,
the Spirit of God “came
mightily upon him,” and he
too prophesied (I Sam. 10:5,
10; “Then when you reach the
Hill of God, where the Philis
tine governor resides, you will
meet a company of prophets
coming down from the hill
shrine, led by lute, harp, fife,
and drum, and filled with pro
phetic rapture. Then the spirit
of the Lord will suddenly take
possession of you, and you too
will be rapt like a prophet and
become another man. When
these signs happen, do what
ever the occasion demands;
God will be with you.” .
“When they reached the Hill
there was a company of
prophets coming to meet him,
and the Spirit of God suddenly
took possession of him . . ”).
The ecstatic nature of such
experiences is evident from I
Samuel 19:23-24: "When this
was reported to Saul he sent
another party. These also fell
into a rapture, and when he
sent more men a third time,
they did the same Saul himself
then sat out for Ramah and
came to the great cistern in
Secu He asked where Samuel

and David were and was told
that they were at Naioth in
Ramah. On his way there the
Spirit of God came upon him
too and he went on, in a rap
ture as he went, till he came to
Naioth in Ramah. There he too
stripped off his clothes and like
the rest fell into a rapture be
fore Samuel and lay down
naked all that day and all that
night. That is why men say,‘ls
Saul also among the
prophets?”’
Elisha was gripped by God’s
“hand” (“power”) while a
minstrel played, and while he
was playing, the power of the
Lord came upon Elisha ...”
Sometimes the Spirit is con
sidered a quasi-physical force
which carried the prophet from
one place to another, like a
great wind blowing the leaves.
(I Kings 18:12” "What will
happen? As soon' as 1 leave
you, the spirit of the Lord will
carry you away, who knows
where?” . . . II K ings
2:16:”... Let them go and
search for your master perhaps
the spirit of the Lord has lifted
him up and cast him on some
mountain or into some val
ley’.” .. . Ezekiel 3:12:14:
“Then a spirit lifted me up,
and I heard behind me a fierce
rushing sound as the glory of
the Lord rose from his place. I
heard the sound of the living
creatures’ wings brushing
against one another, the sound
of the wheels beside them, and
fierce rushing sound. A spirit
lifted me and carried me along,
and I went full of exaltation,
the hand of the Lord strong
upon me.”
Ezekiel 8:2-4: “Suddenly
the hand of the Lord God
came upon me, and I saw what
looked like a man. He seemed
to be all fire from the waist
down and to shine and glitter
like brass from the waist up.
He stretched out what seemed
a hand and seized me by the
forelock. A spirit lifted me up
between heaven and earth, car
ried me to Jerusalem in a vision
of God and put me down at
the entrance to the inner gate
facing north, where stands the
image of Lust to rouse lustful
passion. The glory of the God
of Israel was there, like the
vision 1 had seen in the Plain .”
Ezekiel 11:1 -“A spirit
lifted me up and brought me to
the eastern gate of the Lord’s
house, the gate that faces
eaS Ezekiel 43:1-5: “He led me
to the gate, the gate facing
eastwards, and 1 beheld the
glory of the God of Israel com
ing from the east. His voice was
like the sound of a mighty
torrent, and the earth shone
with his glory. The form that 1
saw was the same as that which
I had seen by the river Kebar,
and I fell on my face. The
glory of the Lord came up to
the temple towards the gate
which face eastwards. A spirit
lifted me up and brought me
into the inner court, and the
glory of the Lord filled the
temple.”
ft was God’s spirit that
spoke through the prophet’s
mouth: 11 Samuel 23:1-2:
“These are the last words of
David: The very word of
David, son of Jesse, the very
word of the man whom the
High God raised up, the
anointed prince of the God of
Jacob, and the singer of
Israel’s psalms: the spirit of the
Lord has spoken through me,
and his word is on my
lips.” ... I Kings 22:24: “Then
Zedekiah son of Kenaanah
came up to Micaiah and struck
him in the face: ‘And how did
the spirit of the Lord pass from
me to speak to you?’ he said.”
Spirit possession was prima
rily associated with ecstatic
prophecy, and (outside
Ezekiel) is seldom mentioned
