THE SPIRIT
AND ALL ISRAEL
Although it is occasionally
stated that God’s Spirit was
with Israel in the wilderness
days (Isa. 63:10: “Yet they
rebelled and grieved his holy
spirit.”; Nehemiah 9:20:
“Thou gavest thy good spirit to
instruct them.”), the Spirit is
never depicted as being be
stowed on the people as a
whole, but only on certain ex
ceptional individuals. But the
hope isexpressed that the time
will come when all Israel will
receive the Spirit. Moses ex
pressed the wish that all God’s
people might be prophets.
(Numbers 11:29: “I wish that
all the Lord’s people were
prophets and that the Lord
would confer his spirit on them
all!”)
Joel announced the time
when the Spirit would be
poured out on all flesh, and all
would in fact prophesy (Joel
2:28: “Thereafter the day shall
come when I will pour out my
spirit on all mankind; your
sons and your daughters shall
prophesy, your old men shall
dream dreams and your young
men see visions . . . .”)
But the outpouring of the
Spirit will bring not merely the
gift of prophecy; it will bring
to Israel a new spirit of
obedience (Ezek. 36:26: “1
will give you a new heart and
put a new spirit within you.”).
(Ezekiel 37:14: “Then 1 will
put my spirit into you and you
shall live.”). (Ezekiel 39:29:
“No longer will I hide my face
from them, I who have poured
out my spirit upon Israel.”),
but and a new loyalty and de
votion to God (Isaiah 44:3-5:
“I will pour out my spirit on
your offspring and my blessing
on your children), a spirit of
“compassion and supplication”
(Zech. 12:10: “I will pour a
spirit of pity and compassion
into the line of David and the
inhabitants of Jerusalem.”
Indeed the gift of the Spirit
is the sign and pledge of the
fulfillment of his covenant
promises (Isa. 59:21: “This,
says the Lord, is my covenant,
which I make with them: My
spirit which rests on you and
my words which I have put
into your mouth shall never
fail you from generation to
generation of your descendants
from now onward for ever.”)
and of the new future that God
has prepared for his people
(Isa. 32:15: “On the soil of my
people shall spring up thorns
and briars, in every happy
home and in the busy town,
for the palace is forsaken and
the crowded streets deserted;
citadel and watch-tower are
turned into open heath, the joy
of wild asses ever after and
pasture for the flocks, until a
spirit from on high is lavished
upon us.”
In the Old Testament, then,
the Spirit is not distinct from
God, but represents God him
self in one aspect of his activity
toward his creation. God is in
his nature “spirit” “and not
flesh” (Isaiah 31:3: “The
Egyptians are men, not God,
their horses are flesh, not
spirit.” The Spirit of God is
indistinguishable from God in
his work as creator (Isaiah

J. W. PINION
J. W. Pinion 53, of Atlanta,
died Friday, July 28, at 1:45
p.m. in Veterans Administra
tion Hospital. He was born in
Chattooga County on June 30,
1919, son of the late Amos
Clifton Pinion and Mrs. Mary
Bell Hawkins Pinion. He was
40:13: “Who has set limits to
the spirit of the Lord?” and
the presence of the Spirit with
God’s people is equivalent to
the presence of God himself'
(Haggai 2:5: “I am with you
says the Lord of Hosts, and my
spirit is present among you.”).
As the Psalmist said, “Cast me
not away from thy presence,
and take not thy holy Spirit
from me” (Psalms 51:11:
“Create a pure heart in me, O
God, and give me a new and
steadfast spirit; do not drive
me from thy presence or take
thy Holy spirit from me; revive
in me the joy of thy de
liverance and grant me a willing
spirit to uphold me.”)
And again, “Whither shall 1
go from thy Spirit? Or Whither
shall I flee from thy presence?”
(Ps. 1 39:7). To have the gift of
the Spirit is to be in the pres
ence of God.
