and here is a tip on using your
freezer.
A FREEZER MAKES
HOLIDAYS
RON SMOOTHLY
Know how to use and main
tain this convenience.
Holidays are too busy a
season for hours of cooking,
yet the highlight of so many
holiday get-togethers is tradi
tional gourmet food. The wise
homemaker, therefore, is not
only doing her Christ mas shop
ping well in advance of the
season, she is cooking now for
next month as well, and is j
storing pre-made festive |
goodies in her freezer
Very often frozen party i
foods such as hors d’ouvres and |
special desserts are the most 1
expensive items in the grocery '
store freezer Yet these are the I
foods most needed during the :
holiday seasons. Those pre
pared now and stored in the
freezer will be homemade
delicious and will save in time
and money next month when
the schedule is more hectic.
Most foods are freezable
and will keep several months in
the freezer. Some exceptions
are boiled potatoes (as in
stews), cake batters, cream fill
ings and puddings, salad greens,
garnishes and the white of hard
cooked eggs (unless put
through a grinder). Vegetables
should be frozen as quickly as
possible, and many should be
scalded before freezing. Fruits
! may be packed three ways:
dry, with sugar or in syrup.
