Gospel in

By Wesley N. Dawson
While Jesus was on earth he
promised to build his church
(Matthew 16:18). It was not
until he died, was buried, and
rose again that this promise
could be fulfilled.
Jesus purchased the church
with his blood which was shed
on Calvary (Acts 20:28). He
gave his life “that he might
sanctify and cleanse it with the
washing of water by the word”
(Ephesians 5:25-26).
On the first day of Pente
cost, after the resurrection and
ascension of our Lord, the
apostle Peter preached to those
who were gathered in Jerusa
lem.
Peter told them of the
prophecies concerning Christ
and showed how they had been
fulfilled. He then charged them
with crucifying the son of God.
He finally concluded his lesson
by telling his hearers that God
raised Jesus from the dead and
made him both Lord and
Christ (Acts 2:14-36).
“Now when they heard this,
they were pricked in their
heart, and said unto Peter and
to the rest of the apostles, Men
and brethren, what shall we
do? Then Peter said unto them,
Repent, and be baptized every
one of you in the name of
Jesus Christ for the remission
of sins, and ye shall receive the
gift of the Holy Ghost” (Acts
2:37-38).
About three thousand
obeyed the gospel that day
(Acts 2:41). “And the Lord
added to the church daily such
as should be saved.” (Acts
2:47).
The church is mentioned as
being in existence for the first
time in Acts 2. It was estab
lished on the day of Pentecost
when Peter preached the
sermon recorded there and the
three thousand were baptized.
When was the church you
are a member of established?
Did it have its beginning before
the events of Acts 2? If so, it
began too early. Did it begin
later? Then it was too late to
be the Lord’s church.
At the Church of Christ in
Teloga, we strive to be exactly
what the people on Pentecost
became. They were Christians,
not members of any denomina
tion. The Lord added them to
his church, the only one he
promised to build

Our daughter came in from the florist the other afternoon and laid a spray of lilies across the pages
of the family Bible. I couldn’t believe my eyes—for it was harvest time, not Easter.
I put them in a vase on the dining room table, and at dinner that night we exclaimed over their sweet
fragrance. But, to me, it was vaguely disturbing—Easter lilies in New England in November—the leaves
drifting to the ground in the yard outside, and a symbol of the Resurrection blooming, all at the same time.
And why not? What is the Resurrection but rebirth ... a new beginning? Even in the fall of the
year, even in the autumn of our lives, is it ever too late to begin again? Even if one has not been going
to church, is it too late to start again? These were the questions I asked myself. I found the answers when
I went back to church last Sunday.
