TURNIP GREEN
WEATHER
For a spell there everybody
was giving me turnip greens
like mad. What I can’t eat right
off the reel, I freeze for an
other time. They are especially
good with hot pepper sauce
poured over them, ac
companied by a big slab of hot
cornbread. If you want to
crumble it up in them, go to it.
A good glass of buttermilk goes
mighty fine with these.
In my daddy’s lifetime, we
had the distinction of having
the biggest turnip green patch
in the county, and many is the
person who has come up and
picked a mess. My father was a
pretty conservative man, but
he was generous with two
things-turnip greens and well
water. He dispensed Freestone
water with pomp and cere
mony, and it was mighty good,
fresh and cold right out of the
well.

YOUNG FRIEND
I had a recent visit from
Christy Wofford, who was six
weeks old. First she “talked”
to me over the phone and later
I met the pretty brunette in
person. She looks about six
months old.
Her mother works, and her
grandmother, Kay Thomas, is
keeping her. Her granddaddy,
Johnny Thomas, as well as Paul
and Roberta Wofford, oiher
grandparents, are also spoiling
her.
She is the sweet little diugh
ter of Mr. and Mrs. Mike Wof
ford.

j land, and up the mountain
quite a few miles. We passed a
ridge covered with red-leaf
i sumac, (“shoe mate”) that
Hooked like it was on fire. We
saw many colorful yards,
ridges, hills, and, of course, the
gorgeous mountain. Our des
tination was scenic Cloudland
Presbyterian Church, where we
heard the Rev. Ronald Ragon’s
final sermon as head of the
| Chattooga Presbyterian Mini
stries, as he has resigned to
accept the pastorate of the
Brainerd Presbyterian Church
(Chattanooga).
The church is one of the
most scenic anywhere with
huge gray rocks sprawled out
on the grounds, and, of course,
the church is rock outside and
inside, too Lit up at night, it
was cozy and pretty with
bright red carpeting.
The message was very
timely, as after a most busy
day and more than a year as
pastor of the C. C. P. M., Mr.
Ragon urged all Chattooga
Christians to “riv up their
motors.” He said if Christians
were not ashamed of Christ,
where there are a thousand,
' there would soon be 2,000.
Dynamic Christians multiply
rapidly.
The different churches
presented them with lovely
pieces of silver. Miss Ethel
Simmons gave them an antique
: piano from London of solid
cherry with beautiful veneer
inlays across the front. Also
there are two brass stands for
old timey lamps, or candles.
The well wishes of all their
friends of the church and
community go with them. The
attendance at the final service
he preached at Trion Sunday
and at the fellowship meal fol
lowing was a manifestation of
the esteem in which the
Ragons are held in the commu
nity, as many people left their
own services to attend this
final sermon, and later enjoy a
sumptuous meal given in their
honor. The Trion church
presented them with a hand
some, engraved large, silver
footed bowl.
One lovely visitor was Rev.
Ragon’s mother, Mrs. Fran
Powell, who was beautifully
attired in a grey ensemble, fea
turing a grey mink jacket and
matching hat. She is employed
at Burchay’s in Chattanooga
and I met her there before I
met the Ragons.

SILVER LINING
Every cloud has a silver lin
ing, they say. For Edythe
McGinnis, it must be that her
broken ankle didn’t come until
after she had her marvelous
trip to Europe and Russia. She
is able to get around again now
and is back at school (Home
Ec, Chattooga High).
ONE MORE
WELCOME
One of my friends, who has
two little girls, is expecting
another child on Feb. 28, my
birthday. 1 asked her what she
was going to do with three
children. “Why, enjoy them, I
guess,” she bravely replied.

HIGH ENOUGH
Beth Hollis surprised me
very much by presenting a
painting of a barn and the hill
and cows to me. I didn’t even
know she was an artist! It is a
j lovely painting and one 1 shall
treasure very much.
We were talking about the
scenery around here, and she
said that she didn’t know why
people had to get high on
drugs, etc. She said just to see
the scenery around here and go
hiking on the ridges is “Just as
high as I want to get.” Just
beautiful.
Sunday, she and Simone
and Phaedra climbed the ridge
behind her house, and she said
there is a beautiful green new
alfalfa field on top, and that it
looked like a painting against
the orange, brown, red, and
yellow trees.
“We don’t have to go away
to see beautiful scenery. We’re
in beautiful country. We just
take it for granted.”
The Pleasant Grove Church
of Christ is losing their
preacher, Minister Herman
| Lenderman, right away.
Simone said, “I’m not loving
another preacher. They come
and you love ’em, and they
leave.” She was referring to
Bro. Lender man, as well as
Bro. Baird, J. Frank Yates, and
the Powell family.
Oh, yes, another tidbit,
down at Jacksonville State at
the Band Festival, they were
lined up for lunch and every
thing was real quiet, and
Phaedra said loud and clear,
“Mama, is that a streak in your
j hair?”
Non-plused Beth answered,
i “Yes. You and your sister put
| it there.”
