Floyd Has
Pay Boost
The Floyd County Commis
sion has approved salary in
creases averaging 10 per cent
for all employees of the public
works department. It also
voted unanimously to recom
mend that the Floyd legislative
delegation enact legislation
staggering terms of the board
and increasing its size from five
members to seven.
The salary increases, which
total $49,000 a year, was
recommended in a study con
ducted by the Coosa Valley
Area Planning and Develop
ment Commission. The study
was requested by the board
which planned to make salaries
of employees in the depart
ment “competitive” with those
of persons doing similar work
in private enterprise.
Last month the board voted
to close the Floyd County Cor
rectional Institution and to
perform all public works with
free labor. In the past, it has
used a combination of free and
inmate labor It considered the
salary increases essential to in
sure an orderly transition
because it will need to hire an
estimated 30 persons to do the
work now done by the institu
tions t>o-100 inmates.
