Listed
ATLANTA (PRN) Reduc
tions in automobile and home
owner insurance rates for sev
eral major companies were an
nounced today by Comptroller
General Johnnie L. Caldwell.
Over $1 million dollars will
be saved by Georgia policy
holders because of the reduc
tion.
Insurance companies reduc
ing automobile insurance rates
are Cotton States, Shield,
Southern Guaranty, Nation
wide, National Indemnity, Gulf
American Fire and Casualty,
and Aetna Life and Casualty.
Homeowner insurance rates
were reduced by the Phoenix
London Group, Shelby Mutual
Insurance Company, United
Services Automobile Associa
tion, and Continental Insur

“I am pleased that many
companies have lowered their
rates on certain insurance
coverages because of their
favorable loss experience,”
Caldwell said. “These actions
are in keeping with the spirit
and intent of the Open Compe
tition Rating Law, as tabbed
by the state legislature.”
Caldwell noted that there
may be more companies filing
rate reductions by the first of
the year.
“Os course, not all rate fil
ings will show a decrease.
There are some companies that
have increased their rates be
cause of adverse loss experi
ences,” Caldwell noted.
Cotton States and its sub
sidiary, Shield Insurance Com
pany reduced bodily injury
liability rates by 11.5 percent
and property damage liability
by 8 percent. Southern Guar
anty Insurance Company re
duced comprehensive coverage
rates by 10 percent and bodily
injury and property damage
liability rates by 10 percent in
Clay ton-excluding College
Park-, Muscogee, Chatta
hoocee, Bibb, Jones, Chatham
and Cobb counties. Aetna’s
new program will give a savings
for good drivers ranging up to
5.5 percent. The other com
panies have not filed their
specific reductions, but will do
so before Jan. 1.
The Phoenix London Group
reduced homeowner’s insur
ance rates by 12.8 percent.
Shelby Mutual reduced their
homeowner’s rates by 15 per
cent.

Safety Precautions Noted
For Christmas Decorating
ATLANTA (PRN)-The
tragedy of fire may mar the
Christmas Festivities for many
Georgians this year. It is esti
mated that over $3 million
dollars in property and homes
will be destroyed this holiday
season. Such tragedies could be
avoided through preparation
and caution.
According to Comptroller
General Johnnie L. Caldwell, a
great deal of this loss could be
avoided through proper pre
ventive measures.
Caldwell, who also serves as
Georgia Safety Fire Commis
sioner, released today a list of
suggestions which could save
the lives and property of Geor
gians this season:
-Before setting up your
natural tree, cut about one
inch from the base to help the
tree absorb water. Place the
tree in a steady stand contain-

the water level above the cut

-If you are using an arti

-Never use lighted candles
on trees. Check all electric light
sets for worn insulation,
broken plugs, and loose bulb
sockets. Use only those sets
with Underwriters’ Labora
