General
Lowers
Excise Tax
Chattooga County
customers of General Tele
phone Co. will note a change in
their monthly bills beginning
Jan. I. The change is the first
of ten steps in phasing out the
telephone service excise tax
which was enacted during
World War II as a “temporary”
measure, according to General
Telephone.
Beginning with the January
statements, the excise tax on
local and toll calls will be nine
percent, down one percent
from previous years.
Each year until December,
1982, the excise tax will drop
one percent. After that date,
the tax will become history,
according to present laws.
The phase-out program is
part of the Federal Excise,
Estate and Gift Tax Adjust
ment Act of 1970.
Richard Martin, manager of
General’s Summerville district,
said, “No other utility has been
saddled with an excise tax
only telephone companies.”
Since World War 11, tele
phone companies have been
collecting the tax and passing itj
on to the government with no
reimbursement for bookkeep
ing or collection expenses, he
noted.
Under the tax revision, all
statements received by custo
mers after Jan. I will reflect
the nine percent rate instead of
ten percent.
All services rendered prior
to Nov. I. but not billed until
Jan. 1, 1973, will reflect the
old percentage rate. Service
after Nov. 1, which is billed
after Jan I , will reflect the
nine percent rate.
