For Regional

ATLANTA-The Southern
Regional Education Board
(SREB) has received a grant of
more than $221 thousand for a
project in regional cooperation
to modernize and improve agri
culture and agricultural
sciences in the South’s Land-
Grant institutions.
The grant, for $221,265
from the W. K. Kellogg Foun

gan will finance for three more
years a project already in oper
ation. It will continue under
the direction of Dr. TJ.
Horne.
Five years ago, when the
project began, substantial
changes were required in agri
cultural programs to keep pace
with the South’s changing
economic and social patterns.
Industrial development, which
had begun a rapid increase,
accelerated migration from
rural to urban areas. This put

New Law Adds
Social Security
For Military
Starting in January, people
who were on active duty with
the armed forces anytime from
1957 through 1967 will get
added social security credit,
according to H. Marvin Boat
wright, social security district
manager in Rome.
As a result of a change in
the social security law, wage
credits of SIOO are granted for
each month of active military
service performed in this 11-
year period.
“Similar social security
credit is already provided for
military service after 1967,” he
said.
Social security contribu
tions on basic military pay are
deducted from paychecks.
“There’s no paycheck deduc
tion for these additional mili
tary wage credits,” Mr. Boat
wright said.
Monthly social security pay
ments to retired and disabled
workers and their families—and
to the families of deceased
workers—are based on average
earnings over a period of years.
Social security benefits paid
to some people have been low
because they were partly based
on low military earnings in the
1957-68 period for which addi
tional military wage credits
were not previously provided.
About 130,000 social secu
rity beneficiaries will be en
titled to higher social security
payments under the new law.
People now getting benefits
who think they may be eligible
for higher payments because of
the new wage credits, should
contact any social security
office.
stress on local governments to
provide educational and health
services, police and fire pro
tection, transportation facil
ities, and opportunities for all
citizens to live comfortably in
new environments.
With the new grant, which
becomes available January 1,
1973, the SREB and its Coun
cil on Higher Education in the
Agricultural Sciences will focus
on adjustments needed to keep
agricultural programs relevant;
manpower and resources
management in agricultural
programs; urbanization and the
management of natural re
sources; the changing image of
agriculture; Professionalism in
agriculture; the changing back
ground of students in agri
culture; and the needs for edu
cational alternatives such as
new curricula, cooperative
programs, and multitrack
routes to complete college level
agricultural education.
