Nine- Year-Old Is Winner
Os Local Essay Contest
Gregg Tanner, nine-year-old
son of Mr. and Mrs. Kelley
Tanner of Summerville has
been selected the Chattooga
County winner of a contest,
“What a Tree Means to Me,”
sponsored by the Georgia
Forestry Commission and the
Georgia Forestry Association.
Dell Bullard, a second-grade
student at Trion Elementary
School, was the second-place
winner and Susan Fletcher, a
third-grade student at Summer
ville Elementary School, placed
third.
For writing the winning
essay, Gregg will receive a
package of 25 seedlings to be
used in beautifying the school
grounds at Summerville
Elementary School, where he is
a student.
His winning essay was:
“Trees beautify our world and
furnish lumber for our homes.
They use up carbon dioxide
and put out oxygen which is
vital for my life.”
According to J.B White,
Chattooga County forest
ranger, Gregg’s essay will be
sent to the Rome district office
of the Georgia Forestry Com
mission, where it will again be
judged for a district prize. The
winner of first place in the

Rifle Association of America
Executive Vice President
Maxwell E. Rich has an
nounced that the executive
committee of the association
had adopted a resolution call
ing for the enactment of a law
which would impose capital
punishment for conviction of
the heinous crime of air piracy
or an attempted air piracy of
an aircraft with passengers.
The resolution calling for
the enactment of this law was

be given for third place. The
district winner will then be
judged on a statewide basis. All
prizes will be awarded on
Arbor Day, Feb. 16.
Some 278 students in Chat
tooga County entered the con
test
lation Committee and pre
sented to the National Rifle
Association executives during a
weekend meeting here in Wash
ington.
The resolution joins a list of
long standing policies of the
association supporting laws
which prohibit the possession
of a firearm by convicted
felons, drug addicts, habitual
drunkards, fugitives from
justice, mental incompetents,
and juvenile delinquents.
